The Battle Creek Bombers defeated the Kalamazoo Growlers 7-1 Monday night at Homer Stryker Field in Kalamazoo. The Bombers and Growlers split Monday’s doubleheader, and the Bombers take a 4-2 season series lead over Kalamazoo in the I-94 Crosstown Rivalry. With the win, the Bombers get back to .500 at 11-11.

The Bombers got the scoring going in the third inning. Shortstop Daniel Patzlaff led off the inning with a single. After Daniel Jipping singled, designated hitter Christian Helsel lined a single into left field, giving the Bombers the 2-0 lead.

The Bombers tacked on a run in the fifth inning. Daniel Patzlaff led off with a double. With one out, right fielder Dean Miller grounded into a fielder’s choice. Patzlaff came home to score and the Bombers took the 3-0 lead.

The Bombers busted the game open in the eighth inning. First baseman Kevin Dupree led off the inning with a walk. With one out, both Ryan Dorow and Cody Sporrer walked to load the bases. Nick Poirier followed with a single, scoring Dupree and Dorow. Daniel Patzlaff grounded into a fielder’s choice, scoring Sporrer, giving the Bombers the 6-1 lead.

Christian Helsel led off the ninth inning with a double and came around to score on a double by Kevin Dupree. Dupree was thrown out trying to extend his double into a triple, but the Bombers scored their seventh and final run.

Starting pitcher Scott Sency went 6.1 innings against Kalamazoo. He allowed one run, struck out seven batters and did not allow a walk as he picked up his second win of the year.

Krystien Johnson-Battilana relieved Sency in the seventh inning. He finished off the final 2.2 innings for the Bombers. He allowed one hit and did not allow a run, and he recorded three strikeouts.

The Bombers now welcome the Green Bay Bullfrogs for a two-game stint in Battle Creek starting Tuesday night at 7:05.
