La Crosse, Wisc.- La Crosse made it a game late, but fell short to the North Division-leading St. Cloud Rox, 7-5. La Crosse now trails the Rox by 3.5 games.

Rox catcher Mark Skonieczny (Illinois) led off the 2nd inning with a single up the middle. He moved over to 3rd base on a passed ball and a groundout to the pitcher. Brendan Illies (North Carolina) singled to left field, scoring Skonieczny.

La Crosse answered in their half of the 2nd. Cullen Large (William & Mary) reached base on an infield single to lead off the inning. He came into score on a fielder’s choice by Gavin Johns (UCLA), tying the game at 1-1.

St. Cloud took the lead back in the 3rd inning. T.J. Freidl (Nevada) was plunked by the opening pitch of the inning. He came into score on a groundout to 2nd by Mark Skonieczny.

Loggers’ right fielder Justin Wylie (San Diego State) saved what could have been another long inning, by throwing out Brendan Illies after a single by T.J. Freidl.

The Rox offense put together another productive inning in the 5th. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, Denis Karas (California) singled up the middle, scoring Drew Freedman (Wake Forest) and Michael Strem (Boston College). La Crosse center fielder Lorenzo Hampton Jr. (California) missed the grounder on the play, which allowed Karas to move to 2nd base. Denis scored as well on a groundout by Mason Mamarella (Kent State) to give St. Cloud a 5-1 lead.

Jared Liebelt (Waubonese CC) shut down the Rox after coming into the game in the 5th. He pitched 3.2 scoreless innings, surrendering no hits with 3 strikeouts.  

St. Cloud padded their lead with two runs on two hits and four walks in the 9th. That proved to be the difference in the game, because the Loggers gave St. Cloud a run for their money in their last inning.

Mason McCoy (Iowa) homered for the 2nd time in the season to lead off the inning. After Cullen Large (William & Mary) reached on an error, Grant Fennell (Nevada) scored him from 1st base on a triple to the deep right field corner. Two more runs scored on a base hit by Lorenzo Hampton Jr. and a groundout by Gavin Johns (UCLA), but St. Cloud held the La Crosse comeback at 4 runs, winning the game 7-5.

Matt Shannon (Angelo State) pitched a beauty tonight (3-0). He lasted 7 innings, giving up his first earned run of the season on 3 hits. He walked 1 and struck out 7 Loggers.

Nick Raquet (William & Mary) took the loss for the Loggers (1-2). He went 4.1 innings, giving up 5 runs (4 earned) with 4 walks and 2 strikeouts.

St. Cloud wins its 10th consecutive game and its 17th out their last 19 games (17-6). La Crosse drops their 2nd game in a row, falling to 14-10. The Loggers welcome the Willmar Stingers into the Lumberyard tomorrow night. Be there when Birdzerk invades the park; game time is 6:05!
