In the tenth, the Lakeshore Chinooks walked-off with an RBI single by Zack Bowers (Georgia). With the sweep and defeat of the Woodchucks, the team captured the 2014 Northwoods League South Division Championship.

“Our pitching staff has done a good job there out there all year, from day one,” Bowers said. “Shaun (Anderson) is a competitor and went out and threw the ball really well, that’s what we expected of him.”

Chinooks starting pitcher Shaun Anderson went eight and two-thirds strong innings. In a no-decision, the right-hander gave up one run off six hits. He also had five strikeouts. At one point, Anderson retired thirteen straight batters.

“We have a special group of young men here. They sacrifice a lot to come here to Mequon,” Field Manager Eddy Morgan said. “It starts with our pitching and Shaun Anderson gave us a tremendous start and that’s what we’ve seen from him all summer.”

The Chinooks took a 1-0 lead in the fourth. With two outs, Kyle Wood (Purdue) and Brant Valach (Eastern Illinois) hit consecutive doubles. Wood came home on an RBI single by left fielder Connor McKay (Kansas).

In the seventh, the Woodchucks tied the game at one. All-Star Paul DeJong hit a double to left-center field. He advanced on a wild pitch by Anderson. Blair Beck then hit a single and DeJong scored.

Wood reached base again with a single to center field off Blair Beck in the tenth. He advanced on a balk. Pinch-hitter Michael Morman (Richmond) also drew a walk. Bowers then hit a single and Wood scored.

Sterling Koerner replaced Anderson with two outs in the ninth. The right-hander tossed one and one-third innings and picked up the win. He surrendered one hit and struck out the side swinging in the tenth.

The righty Beck (0-1) took the loss for Wisconsin. In two-thirds of an inning, he gave up one run off two hits.

On Thursday, the Chinooks will play the winner of the North Division Championship Series on the road. The series between Mankato MoonDogs and Willmar Stingers will be decided on Wednesday, August 13.

The team will play game two at Kapco Park on Friday, August 15 at 6:35 p.m. Tickets will go on sale on Wednesday, August 13 at 8:00 a.m.
