Madison, WI – After a nice day off on Monday, the Lakeshore Chinooks hopped on the bus Tuesday to take on the Madison Mallards. The Chinooks came into the game with a 7-9 record, only three games behind first place, but would fall to the Mallards in a tough 15-3 loss and brought their record to 7-10.

On the mound for the Chinooks was righty pitcher Cole Gnetz (Miami-Ohio) who made his ninth start for the ball club with a 1-1 record. Gnetz came into the game with a 3.26 ERA and 29 strikeouts in his 41.1 innings of work.

The Mallards struck on Gnetz early in the bottom of the second after Josh Stowers (Louisville) reached off an error by the Chinooks defense. A passed ball then advanced Stowers to second. Cam Comer (Virginia) singled to score Stowers and made it 1-0 Mallards. Jesse Medrano (Fresno State) kept it rolling for the Mallards after he drew a walk to put runners on first and second. A past ball would later advance both runners to second and third. Nico Hoerner (Stanford) reached first off a fielder’s choice that scored Comer and gave the Mallards a 2-0 lead.

After an RBI single by Nick Roark (Oral Roberts) gave the Mallards a 3-0 lead, Gnetz was taken out after pitching an inning and a third and would be replace on the mound by Joe Stoll (Ohio State) who took over in the bottom of the second. Stoll took the mound with a 3.55 ERA in his 12.2 innings pitched.

The bottom of the second continued as Nelson Maldonado (Florida) stepped up to the plate with one out and hit a single that scored the final run of the inning and gave the Mallards a 4-0 lead.

Heath Renz (UW-Whitewater) took the mound for his eighth start on the season for the Mallards and made his second appearance against the Chinooks. Renz came into the game with a 2.18 ERA and 20 strikeouts in his 33 innings pitched.

The Chinooks would knock their zero off the board in the top of the third after Zac Taylor (Houston) led off the order with a single. Joe Duncan (Eastern Illinois) reached first off an error by the Mallards shortstop which allowed Taylor to reach home and put the score at 4-1 Mallards.

There was no holding back for the Mallards as they added to their score in the bottom of the third after Stowers hit one in the gap and reached second off an error. Medrano hit an RBI single that brought Stowers home and made it 5-1 Mallards.

The Chinooks added on a run in the top of the fourth after Cody Ducote (LSU) and James Bleming (Lehigh) drew back-to-back walks. Matt Reardon (Florida Gulf Coast) stepped up to the plate and roped a one out RBI double that scored Ducote and made the score 5-2 Mallards.

In the bottom of the third, Hoerner singled for the Mallards and Maldonado reached on a fielder’s choice. With the bases loaded, Bryce Carter (Standford) drew a walk that brought a run home and left the bases loaded for Stowers who hit a two run RBI single and increased the Mallards lead to 8-2.

In to pitch from the Chinooks bullpen was Zach Reeg (Augustana) who took the mound in the bottom of the fifth. Reeg would give up an RBI single to Maldonado and a two run home run to Palace to increase the Mallard’s lead to 11-2.

The Chinooks would tack on their last run of the evening off of Mallards pitcher Ty Pennington (Nevado-Reno) in the top of the seventh after Duncan smacked a double and made it 11-3 Mallards.

The runs continued for the Mallards as Palace hit a grandslam to clear the bases in the bottom of the seventh and end the scoring for both teams giving the Mallards a 15-3 win over the Chinooks.
