Mequon, WI- The Lakeshore Chinooks (1-0) defeated the Rockford Rivets, 21-6, winning their first game in the second half of the season. This game was not only entertaining, but one for the history books.

The Rivets would jump out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning, thanks to RBIs from Hunter Feduccia and Neal Tyrell. The first batter of the game, Ryan Hutchinson, reached 1st base after a dropped 3rd strike and a poor throw by catcher Rylan Thomas (Central Florida) to 1st base. Hutchinson would later come around to score on an RBI single from Hunter Feduccia, giving Rockford its first run of the game. Later in the inning, a sacrifice fly from Neal Tyrell allowed John Rave to score after he singled earlier in the inning.

The Chinooks weren’t satisfied with a 2-0 deficit, as Lakeshore would get revenge and tie the game up in the bottom half of the inning. After a Nick Gatewood (Georgia State) 2-out single, Rylan Thomas made up for his earlier error by delivering a 2-run home run, which was his fifth long ball of the summer.

In the bottom of the 2nd inning, Matthew Mika (Central Florida) proved that he isn’t the only UCF Knight with power, as he crushed a 2-run homer of his own well over the left field patio, giving the Chinooks a 4-2 lead.

The Rivets would tie the game in the top of the 3rd, as Hunter Feduccia and Neal Tyrell once again delivered RBIs. A one-out walk from John Rave set the stage for Hunter Feduccia, who came through with an RBI double. Neal Tyrell sacrificed himself for the second time of the game, as a sacrifice fly plated JC DeMuri and tied the game at 4.

The Chinooks would load up the bases in the bottom of the 3rd to set the stage for Caleb Dean (Lamar). After an Owen Miller (Illinois State) single, Jacob Richardson (Southern Arkansas) walk, and Daniel DeSimone (Oklahoma State) single, Caleb Dean delivered in the clutch with a bases-clearing double to give the Chinooks a 7-4 lead.

Rockford would tack on a run in the top of the 4th on a Brian Klein RBI single, bringing in Kian O’Brien after he led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch. After the Rivets loaded the bases, Ryan Hutchinson stepped up to the plate looking to give the Rivets the lead. The result was not what Hutchinson was looking for, as he hit into an inning-ending triple play. This was the second triple play Hutchinson has hit into in his last 4 games, and the first triple play turned in the history of the Lakeshore Chinooks.

The Rivets would close the gap even more in the top of the 7th, as Brian Klein went deep for a leadoff solo home run. The homer was Klein’s 1st of the season.

After a leadoff walk issued to Rylan Thomas in the bottom of the 7th inning, Owen Miller hit his 2nd home run of his young season, pushing the Lakeshore lead to 3. After Drake Lubin (Eastern Michigan) walked and Caleb Dean singled, Joe Duncan (Eastern Illinois) delivered a 2-run single to give the Chinooks an 11-6 lead.

Lakeshore piled on 10 runs in the bottom of the 8th, starting with a Jacob Richardson RBI single, scoring Nick Gatewood. After the Chinooks loaded up the bases, Daniel DeSimone walked to bring home Jack Dunn (Northwestern). Caleb Dean then reached 1st base on a fielder’s choice, allowing Owen Miller to score. Jacob Richardson later scored on a wild pitch.

With the bases still loaded, Nick Gatewood walked, scoring Caleb Dean. Jack Dunn followed Gatewood with a walk of his own, bringing home Drake Lubin from 3rd base. Hunting for his second cycle in his last three games, Owen Miller stepped up to the plate and delivered a ball hit in the right-center gap. Miller didn’t stop until he made it all the way to 3rd base, as Miller collected the rare feat- hitting for the cycle. The triple cleared the bases and scored Matthew Mika, Nick Gatewood, and Jack Dunn. Jacob Richardson then delivered his second RBI single of the inning, scoring Miller.

This was certainly not an ordinary baseball game, as the Chinooks not only turned their first triple play in team history, but Owen Miller hit for his second cycle in his last three games. The crowd lost its mind after Miller accomplished the feat, as well as the press box.

Owen Miller finished the day a perfect 5-5, scoring 3 runs and driving in 5 runs while hitting for the cycle for a second time in his last three games. Miller was also named the Northwoods League Player of the Night for the second time in his last three games following the incredible performance. Miller’s average on the season now sits at a silly .722 after the 5-5 night.

Miller, after making history, said, “It’s good to be back playing and it’s definitely fun when our offense gets rolling. If we keep our mind right, I definitely think we can make a run in the second half.”

Miller joked around about looking to complete the cycle, knowing that he needed the hardest part- the triple. “I knew that I needed a triple. As soon as I saw it go past the centerfielder, I figured that I was going to roll into third pretty easily.”

The Lakeshore Chinooks (1-0) will look to build off this incredible game as they head to Rockford to face the Rivets once again Thursday night as Alec Marsh takes the ball looking for his second victory of the season.
