Slider's Healthy Thought of the Day is About Caffeine!

Did you know…

  • Caffeine works by blocking the effect of the brain's natural regulator, adenosine.  During the day, your brain naturally builds up its levels of adenosine. When they reach a threshold concentration, the adenosine binds to special receptors that react by firing instructions to make your body sleepy.  When caffeine comes in, the receptor binds with the caffeine instead of the adenosine.
  • Side effects of caffeine include blurred vision, thirst, anxiety, mouth dryness, increased heartbeat, nausea, increased urination and more.
  • There are more than 1,000 chemicals in a cup of coffee; of these, only 26 have been tested and half caused cancer in rats.
  • 33% of those who drink four or more caffeinated beverages, such as soda or coffee, daily are put at a higher risk for sleep apnea.
  • Once you take a sip of coffee, it takes only 10 minutes or so for the caffeine to kick in.
