(Rochester, Minn.) – The Growlers scored three runs in the second inning to help them beat the Rochester Honkers 6-0 in Kalamazoo Sunday afternoon.

The Growlers got an RBI triple from Jordan Verdon (San Diego State), Verdon then scored on a double by David Hensley (San Diego State) along with TJ Marik (Austin Peay), to make the score 3-0.

The Growlers added another run in the fourth inning when Trey Ganns (Northern Kentucky) hit a solo home run to left field, making the score 4-0. Kalamazoo added two more in the sixth inning when Camden Duzenack hit a two-run home run (Dallas Baptist), giving the Growlers a 6-0 win.

The Honkers’ defense made key plays to keep the game close, including a couple of leaping catches from Keaton Weisz (Auburn) at third base, while Jacob Thomas (UC Davis) made some great plays at shortstop.

Clayton McGinness (1-3) (Wichita State) got start and the loss for the Honkers; he pitched six innings, allowed six runs, three of which were earned, on six hits, walked one and struck out one. Max Gamboa (Pepperdine) and Sam Bjorngjeld (Tulane) pitched the final two innings without giving up a run, and they each struck out one.

Devin Pellien (3-0) (Nova Southeastern) got the start for the Growlers and the win; he pitched eight innings, allowed no runs on two hits and struck out eight.

Jackson Thoreson (St. Mary’s) went 1 for 2 with a double to lead the Honkers’ offense, while Miles Lewis (North Dakota) and Turner Buis (Cal State Fullerton) each collected a hit.

Hensley went 3 for 3 with two RBI to lead the Growlers offense, while Ganns went 1 for 2 with two runs scored and an RBI.

The Honkers are back at Mayo Field Monday to take on the Thunder Bay Boarder Cats. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. and gates open at 6:00 for FLY RST NIGHT with ABC 6 News!
