Fond du Lac, Wisc. – For just the second time this summer, the Battle Creek Bombers (29-22, 9-7) were held to no runs, falling to the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders 9-0. The Dock Spiders (24-28, 8-8) are the first team to shutout Battle Creek since June 23 and just the fourth team to sweep the Bombers in the summer of 2017.

Fond du Lac hopped on the Bombers’ starter Taylor Horn (Wayne State) in the second inning, it started with a drop third strike in which catcher Justin Felix (Arkansas State) couldn’t throw out the runner. Horn allowed a walk and a single to put runners on first and second. A Dock Spiders single scored the first run of the game. Horn would get out number two with a strikeout, but Fond du Lac would rally with two away. A sac fly and triple would clear the bases and give Fond du Lac a 5-0 lead.

In the third, the Bombers offense garnered a single from Nick Menken (Virginia Tech) but Battle Creek couldn’t get anything going. The bottom half of the third saw Fond du Lac add on three more runs to their lead. Tim Nelson (UC San Diego) came in to relieve Horn. After getting two outs, Nelson surrendered a single, walked and hit a batter to load the bases. Back-to-back singles would bring home all three base runners and give Fond du Lac an 8-0 lead.

Battle Creek garnered a two-out single from JD Mundy (Virginia Tech), but he was left on base. Even though Nelson allowed three runs, he allowed no runs the next four innings and only surrendered three hits.

The Bombers offensively got a lead-off single from Mundy in the eighth, but a double play hit by Aaron Antonini (Middle Tennessee State) gave the Dock Spiders two outs. Menken would double down the left field line, and Nikola Vasic (Southern Illinois) was hit by a pitch. In the next at-bat, Alex Howard (Arkansas State) would fly out to the left field warning track for the third out.
