(Madison, WI) The Mallards have added Kris Kauppila, a sophomore infielder from the University of Portland, and Rusty Shellhorn, a sophomore left-handed pitcher from Washington State for the team’s upcoming season.

A 6’0”, 175 pound native of Glendale, California, Kauppila earned All-West Coast Conference Honorable Mention and landed on the conference’s All-Freshman Team a year ago after leading the Pilots with 48 runs, 72 hits, and 20 doubles. He also hit .336, belted four home runs, drove in 21, and stole eight bases. Kauppila hit a home run in his first collegiate at-bat in the team’s first at-bat of the season against Utah Valley.

This spring, Kauppila is hitting .306 with five doubles, 11 RBI, and five stolen bases in seven attempts. His .398 on-base percentage is good for second on the team.

“I’m definitely excited to be a part of the Mallards organization and fortunate to have the opportunity to play in front of so many great fans this upcoming season,” said Kauppila.

“I’m also excited to improve my hitting while using a wood bat as well as coping with the ups-and-downs that come with playing a minor league-type schedule.”

A 5’8”, 186 pound native of Spokane, Washington, Shellhorn appeared in four games a year ago, and went 0-1 with a 12.15 ERA in 6.2 innings of work. As a senior at Central Valley (WA) High School, he went 7-3 with a 0.78 ERA and notched 125 strikeouts in 59 innings of work. As a junior Shellhorn pitched a no-hitter in his first career start on the varsity squad.

This spring he is 0-1 with a 4.35 ERA over 10.1 innings that includes two starts.

“I’m a team-first kind of guy, so while I do expect big things from myself this summer, I’ll determine my success in Madison by the number of wins and losses we accumulate,” said Shellhorn.

Opening Day is slated for Wednesday, June 2, at 7:05 p.m. against the Wisconsin Woodchucks.
