(Wausau, WI) The Wisconsin Woodchucks have signed outfielders Scott Schauer of San Diego University, and Patrick Claussen of Washington State. The sparkplug duo should add some valuable talent to a deep ‘Chucks outfield ready to take the field in a few short weeks.
Schauer, a 5’9”, 180 lbs. junior, is playing in his first season as a Torero after spending two seasons and a redshirt year at Golden West College. At GWC last season, Schauer posted a .365 batting average, 32 runs batted in, and a .968 OPS. He played his high school ball at Servite High School in Anaheim, where he was teammates with 2010 ‘Chucks third baseman Chris Amezquita. Schauer’s father, Randy, also played ball in the Oakland Athletics’ organization.
In Schauer’s first season at San Diego, the Toreros are undefeated in conference play and are 30-16 overall. Primarily coming off the bench as a Greenhorn, Schauer has compiled some very respectable stats, posting a .333 batting average with a .444 slugging percentage. This summer, the ‘Chucks will not only expect Schauer to log some innings in the outfield, but also to help out on the mound in relief.
In Patrick Claussen’s second season as a Cougar, the 5’10” lefty is hitting a solid .286 with a terrific .414 on-base percentage through 31 games. A Washington state native, Claussen appears to have put himself in a good position to win a regular starting job next season, and a strong summer with the Woodchucks can only help his chances.
