Nail Bitting, Close Rival Games, and Extra Innings on Day 9 in the Northwoods League
The Thunder Bay Border Cats and Rochester Honkers start off the afternoon with the Border Cats improving their seasonal record (3-7) after a win 4-3. The Madison Mallards defeated the Booyah in a 5-2 comeback after losing their first game this season last night. Lastly, the Wisconsin Rapids Rafter shut out the Lakeshore Chinooks after a great pitching performance by Neil Abbatiello (Wagner).
Rochester Honkers 3, Thunder Bay Border Cats 4
The Thunder Bay Border Cats continue their three day winning against the Rochester Honkers. The Cats improve their season record 3-7, ending todays game 4-3. Honkers Trace Peterson (Lake Erie College) hit a double, one RBI, and two strike outs. Border Cats Andrew Shebloski (Saint Mary’s College (CA)) also had one double and one RBI during the first inning. The winning pitcher was Thunder Bay’s Joe Moran (Anderson University (IN)) pitching five innings with four hits, two runs, and four strike outs. With Aaron Kern (Minot State University (ND)) came in with the save giving zero hits, zero runs, and zero strike outs during a one inning period. While the losing pitcher was Daniel Silva (UC-Colorado Springs) with four hits, three runs, zero walks, and five strike outs.
Eau Claire Express 7, La Crosse Loggers 3
The Eau Claire Express defeated the La Crosse Loggers during their seven inning double header with a final score 7-3. The Express came to win scoring five runs in the first two innings, leaving the Loggers in the dust at the beginning. La Crosse Ryan Holgate (Arizona) scored one home run, with one RBI, and one run during game #2. Eau Claire’s Bonne Montgomery (UT- Arlington) had two RBIs, one double hit, and zero strike outs while at bat. The losing pitcher was Loggers, Jack Ferguson (Madonna), pitching four inning with seven hits, five runs, one walk, and zero strike outs. While the winning pitcher of the night was Nick Alvarado (Illinois- Springfield) giving up four hits, one run, three walks, and three strike outs.
Green Bay Booyah 2, Madison Mallards 5
The Madison Mallards make a comeback during tonights against the Green Bay Booyah with a final score 5-2. Last night the Mallards lost their first game of the season but they came back stronger today with motivation and purpose. Madison took charge during the second inning scoring four runs but the Booyah didn’t give up scoring two runs in the ninth but it wasn’t enough to take the win. Green Bay’s Joe Mason (Mount Olive) hit one home run and two RBIs tonight. For the Mallards Austin Blazevic (Southeastern Missouri) had one RBI, one run, and two hits. The losing pitcher from Green Bay was Will Saxton (Florida International) with seven hits, five runs, one walk, and four strike outs during his four innings at the mound. Madison’s winning pitcher was Aj Archambo (Oral Roberts) with one hit, zero runs, three walks, and three strike outs. In the last inning, Theo Denlinger (Bradley) came in with the save pitch with zero hits, zero runs, and one strike out.
Traverse City Pit Spitters 3, Rockford Rivets 4
The Traverse City Pit Spitters lost to the Rockford Rivets in a close battle 4-3 on day 9 of the Northwoods League. Both teams scored two runs in the first inning but the Rivets earned another two runs in the bottom of the second bridging the gap between the Spitters. Rockford’s Jeff Heinrich (South Carolina) scored one home run, two RBIs, and three hits during tonights nail bitting game. The winning pitcher was Zack Jones (Rockford) pitching five innings with eight hits, three runs, two walks, and five strikes. Kyle Seebach (Northern Illinois) assisted in the saving pitch during the last two inning giving up zero hits, zero runs, and four strike outs. While Traverse City Pit Spitters losing pitcher was Garett Simmons (Ball State) who pitched for four innings with three hits, two runs, three walks, and eight strike outs.
Duluth Huskies 3, Waterloo Bucks 4
The Waterloo Bucks beat the Duluth Huskies 4-3 in a nail bitting duel. The Bucks game out of the gates scoring three runs in the second inning but the Huskies gave it their all and tried to catch up but it wasn’t enough. Waterloo’s Dylan Phillips (Kansas State) had two RBIs and hit two doubles during tonights game. On the other side, the Huskies Matt Hogan (Vanderbilt) hit one double in the third and one RBI. The winning pitcher of the game was the Bucks Jimmy Smiley (Columbia) with four hits, two runs, one walk, and four strike outs. With Alec Holcomb (North Dakota State) coming in with the save for two innings having three hits, one run, and four strike outs. While Duluth’s Alex Rao (Notre Dame) pitching six innings giving up four hits, four runs, four walks, and four strike outs.
Wisconsin Woodchucks 9, Fond du Lac Dock Spiders 6
The Wisconsin Woodchucks defeated the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders tonight ending the game 9-6. The Woodchucks really made their move during the tops of the sixth and seventh innings scoring two runs each inning to grab the win over the Spiders. Jack Alexander (Notre Dame) had three RBIs and hit a double for the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders. While the Woodchucks, Zach Klapak (University of Pittsburg), collected a double hit and four RBIs. The winning pitcher was Zach Haupt (UW Stevens Point) with two hits, one run, and two strike outs during his two innings for the Woodchucks. Nolan Lebamoff (Kankakee Community College) swooped in for the save in the last inning with zero hits, zero runs, zero walks, and one strike out. Fond du Lac’s losing pitcher was Jared Jones (Saint Xavier University) pitching five innings with seven hits, five runs, one walk, and two strike outs.
Lakeshore Chinooks 0, Wisconsin Rapids Rafters 7
The Wisconsin Rapids Rafter shut out the Lakeshore Chinooks 7-0. The Rafter scored a consistent two runs in the first, fourth, and fifth innings to take the win over Lakeshore. Wisconsin’s Johnny Gonzales (Houston Baptist) had two RBIs and also hit a double in the first inning. The winning pitcher was Rafters Neil Abbatiello (Wagner) pitching five innings giving up two hits, zero runs, four walks, and nine strike outs. While the Chinooks losing pitcher was Austin Edwards (Ellsworth CC) with two hits, two runs, and one walk during his one inning period at the plate.
Mankato MoonDogs 2, St. Cloud Rox 10
The St. Cloud Rox crushed the Mankato MoonDogs during tonights game with a final score 10-2. The Rox scored five runs during the bottom of the third giving the MoonDogs no change to catch up for the win. St. Cloud’s Gus Steiger (South Dakota State) hit a double, three RBIs, and one run. Another great performance was from Ben Carew (Kent State University) hit a triple and two RBIs during tonights match up. The winning pitcher was Carter Bosch (Georgetown University) pitching eight inning with one run, one hit, one walk, and striking out six. While Mankato’s Jimmy Larson (Minnesota State) gave up six hits, five runs, three walks, and two strike outs.
Kalamazoo Growlers 3, Battle Creek Bombers 4
The Battle Creek Bombers overruled the Kalamazoo Growlers after a close scoring game tonight. The final score was 4-3. The Bombers came out with a bang scoring three runs in the first. Growlers Fox Leum (North Iowa Area CC) scored a home run in the first inning, one RBI, and one run. For Battle Creek Roy Thurman (Akron), Matthew Patton (Central Arkansas), and Rhett McCall (Lamar) had one RBI each. The winning pitcher was Pablo Arevalo (Barry) pitching three innings with three hits, zero runs, one walk, and one strike. Burrell Jones (Wabash Valley College) swooped in for the save with one hit, zero runs, and two strike outs on the plate. Lastly for the Growlers, Dion Henderson (Texas Christian University) was the losing pitcher of the game giving up one hit, three runs, five walks, and zero strike outs.
Willmar Stingers 6, Bismarck Larks 7
The Willmar Stingers and Bismarck Larks game went into extra innings with the Bismarck Larks taking the victory with Wyatt Ulrich (St. Johns (MN)) walk off in the 10th inning. The final score was a close 7-6. In the top of the third, the Stinger Brandon Bohning (CSU-Northridge) has a two-run home run putting the Stingers ahead but it wasn’t enough when the Larks threw a one run score in the tenth. Bohning also had two RBIs during tonights game. While the Larks Gavin Rogers (University of West Alabama) had two RBIs and three hits. The winning pitcher was Evan Miller (Xavier) with two hits, one run, and one strike out. The losing pitcher was Casey Cobb (Alabama) pitching one inning giving three hits, two runs, one walk, and one strike out.
Kenosha Kingfish 3, Kokomo Jackrabbits 7
The Kokomo Jackrabbits defeated the Kenosha Kingfish with a final score of 7-3. The Jackrabbits really came together during the fifth and sixth innings score three runs each. Kingfish’s Charles Middleton (Sierra College) had two RBIs and two hits during tonights game. While Jack Kraus (UW-Milwaukee) received two RBIs and hit a double for the Jackrabbits. The winning pitcher of the night was Trevor Nicholson (Eastern Illinois) pitching an impressive six inning with six hits, two runs, one walk, and one strike out. For the last three innings Blaine Traxel (CSU- Northridge) came in for the save giving up four hits, one run, and five strike outs. While, the losing pitcher was Kyle Gendron (Winona State University) with seven hits, four runs, four walks, and two strike outs during his four innings of work.
