THUNDER BAY, Ont. –\u00a0<\/strong>The Duluth Huskies (27-35, 11-16) fell 11-5 to the Thunder Bay Border Cats (23-35, 7-17) on the road on Friday evening. Duluth mustered just four hits on the game while Devin Doyle took his first loss of the season.<\/p>\n

Doyle got the ball for Duluth and didn’t have his usual stuff. It was his shortest outing of the season at 2.2 innings pitched, and he allowed a season-high four earned runs. Duluth jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second thanks to some shoddy Thunder Bay defense, but Doyle gave it all back and then some by the time the third inning ended.<\/p>\n

The rest of the game unraveled from there. The Border Cats added three in the fourth, two in the fifth, and two more in the seventh en route to a thorough domination. The Huskies used six different pitchers, with none working longer than Doyle’s 2.2 innings and all but Michael Zunker in the eighth allowing a run. Mark Ross II had three hits and three RBI for the Border Cats, who got home run contributions from Alex Kean and Justin Anctil. The Duluth pitching staff walked 13 and hit four, reverting to their early season woes.<\/p>\n

Thunder Bay got mostly excellent pitching to help supplement the offense. Tyler Bribiescas worked five innings, allowing two hits and three walks and striking out seven. He allowed two runs in the top of the second but both were credited as unearned thanks to two errors in the frame. Bribiescas earned the win, his fifth of the season. Sam MacLaughlin worked the sixth and seventh innings, allowing a run. Eli Heyen tossed a clean eighth but walked the bases loaded with one out in the ninth. The Huskies were chasing eight and got just two thanks to Kayden Campbell and Reagan Reeder singles.<\/p>\n

Duluth splits the series, eaning they need just one more win to clinch their first Superior Cup since 2023. The Superior Cup is awarded to the winner of the season series between Duluth and Thunder Bay, and the Huskies have a 6-4 record against the Border Cats this season. The final two games of the season will be between the two clubs in Duluth, where the Huskies need one to win it, while the Border Cats can retain the Cup with a sweep, since tie goes to the incumbent.<\/p>\n

On Deck<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Huskies travel to Waterloo for a two game set, followed by a four game series against Eau Claire, with Tuesday’s game at home and Monday, Wednesday and Thursday all taking place at Carson Park. Duluth will wind down their season next Friday and Saturday against Thunder Bay.
