DULUTH, Minn. –\u00a0<\/strong>One game after allowing 13 runs, the Duluth Huskies (28-38, 12-19) pitching staff held the Eau Claire Express (42-23, 24-8) to just two runs in a 5-2 victory. Duluth is now 5-0 in games against Eau Claire where the Express are held to three or fewer runs, and 0-5 when the Trains muster four or more.<\/p>\n

Mason Pound was dominant as a starter, posting by far his best effort in a Duluth uniform. Pound tossed 100 pitches and 61 strikes to get through six innings, allowing seven hits but walking none and letting just two unearned runs cross the plate. Both runs scored on a two-run single from Ethan Miller in the 2nd inning after a Chance Sobbry error at second. Pound allowed three more hits in the third, but Max Berrisford threw a runner out and Pound stranded runners on the corners. In his final three frames, Pound allowed just two base runners and neither passed first base.<\/p>\n

Pound got early run support, as Duluth pushed two across in the top of the first. Wyatt Pennington doubled, Sobbry drove him home and Andrew Ermis singled Sobbry across against starter Bryce Ehr. That was all the damage Ehr would allow though, going zero for zero with Pound through five innings to exit in a 2-2 game.<\/p>\n

Duluth broke through to the bullpen first, facing Cody Callahan in the bottom of the sixth. Callahan walked the first two he faced, and Ermis and Haferkamp hit back-to-back doubles to push three across before an out was made in the inning. The 5-2 cushion was all Duluth needed, although it did pick up an insurance run in the eighth.<\/p>\n

Jude Sundquist was first out of the pen, but he walked the first two batters in the seventh on just 10 total pitches. The Huskies quickly turned to closer Pierce Anderson, who completed three innings without allowing a hit, good for his longest outing of the season. Anderson walked three but struck out three, and Berrisford caught two more stealing in the eighth as Duluth slammed the door.<\/p>\n

Pennington and Ermis led the way offensively for the Huskies, Pennington finished 3-for-5 with two doubles and a run, while Ermis drove in three and scored a fourth during a 2-for-4 day out of the six spot. Eau Claire sprinkled seven hits in the game, all singles, with Sawyer Stein and Adam Salazar notching a pair, while Miller drove in both runs and walked twice to climb aboard three times in the contest.<\/p>\n

On Deck<\/strong><\/p>\n

Duluth and Eau Claire will return to Wisconsin to finish out the four game set at Carson Park over the next two days. The Huskies then return home for the Superior Cup series finale, playing two games against Thunder Bay at Wade Stadium. Duluth needs just one win to clinch the SupCup, while Thunder Bay can retain possession by winning both.
