{"id":7952,"date":"2022-06-13T22:35:35","date_gmt":"2022-06-14T03:35:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/northwoodsleague.com\/duluth-huskies\/?p=7952"},"modified":"2022-06-13T22:35:35","modified_gmt":"2022-06-14T03:35:35","slug":"huskies-fall-to-honkers-at-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/northwoodsleague.com\/duluth-huskies\/2022\/06\/13\/huskies-fall-to-honkers-at-home\/","title":{"rendered":"Huskies Fall to Honkers At Home"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Huskies surrender five runs in eighth inning<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wyatt Kopelman \u2013 wmk23@miami.edu<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Duluth, Minn \u2013 The Duluth Huskies baseball team fell to the Rochester Honkers, 10-5, on Monday night at Wade Stadium.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Trailing by two runs after the fourth inning, first baseman Kristian Campbell (Georgia Tech) hit an RBI single to slice Duluth\u2019s deficit to 4-3 in the fifth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Honkers had plenty of scoring left to offer, however.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the eighth, the Honkers scored three runs on three consecutive walks. Third baseman Kimo Fukofuka reached base as a hit batsman to cap off a five-run frame.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Huskies (9-5) found a little bit of scoring momentum in the final two innings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With two outs, left fielder JD Rogers (Vanderbilt) drove in a run on a single to left field, moving to 1-for-3 while extending his on-base streak to 12 games. Center fielder Noah Marcelo hit a two-out RBI double in the ninth for the final Huskies run.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Despite 12 strikeouts from their lineup, the Honkers (6-7) relied on nine combined runs scored across the fourth and eighth for the win.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jake Hamilton (1-1) was charged with the loss, while Rochester\u2019s Brant Alazaus (2-0) garnered the victory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Next, the Huskies return to Wade Stadium to continue a four-game homestand against the Mankato MoonDogs. First pitch is slated for 6:35 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">###<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Duluth Huskies are a member of the finest developmental league for elite college baseball players, the Northwoods League. A valuable training ground for coaches, umpires, and front office staff, over 280 Northwoods League players have advanced to Major League Baseball, including three-time All-Star and 2016 Roberto Clemente Award winner Curtis Granderson, three-time Cy Young Award winner and World Series Champion Max Scherzer (NYM), two-time World Series Champions Ben Zobrist and Brandon Crawford (SFG) and World Series Champion Chris Sale (BOS). As well as 2019 Rookie of the Year and 2019\/2021 Home Run Derby Champion Pete Alonso (NYM) and 2021 All-Star, MLB Gold Glove winner and 2019 Second Team All-MLB shortstop Marcus Semien (TEX).
