{"id":8252,"date":"2022-08-16T23:09:37","date_gmt":"2022-08-17T04:09:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/northwoodsleague.com\/duluth-huskies\/?p=8252"},"modified":"2022-11-09T10:26:43","modified_gmt":"2022-11-09T16:26:43","slug":"huskies-advance-to-northwoods-league-championship-with-5-3-win-over-willmar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/northwoodsleague.com\/duluth-huskies\/2022\/08\/16\/huskies-advance-to-northwoods-league-championship-with-5-3-win-over-willmar\/","title":{"rendered":"Huskies Advance to Title Game"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Duluth knocks out Willmar with three-run fourth<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wyatt Kopelman \u2013 wmk23@miami.edu<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Willmar, Minn.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2013 The four-year wait is over.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And all it took for the Duluth Huskies to return to the Northwoods League championship was to win at a ballpark they had yet to win at all season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Third baseman Devin Hurdle hit his fourth home run of the season early, and Duluth relied on a three-run fourth inning to defeat the Willmar Stingers, 5-3, and win the 2022 Great Plains Tuesday night at Bill Taunton Stadium.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hurdle later added an RBI single to ignite the Huskies\u2019 surge in the fourth. Center fielder Cam Frederick, now 2-for-4 in each of the past two contests, added an RBI single prior to a sacrifice fly from right fielder Jack Painter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Despite relinquishing each of Willmar\u2019s three runs, right-handed starter Alex Potter totaled a season-high six strikeouts in 5 \u2154 innings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Potter escaped a jam in the fifth, stranding runners on the corners following a one-out triple.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Three different Huskies batters logged multi-hit outings as part of Duluth\u2019s most hits in a playoff setting across its three contests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Neither team scored in the contest\u2019s final four frames, meanwhile.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Duluth (37-33) moved to 28-6 when leading after six innings.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Once Duluth\u2019s bullpen filled Potter, Tyler Moniz Witten extended a scoreless streak to 2 \u2153 innings. The right-handed freshman was relieved in the eighth, leading right-hander Jake Schelonka into a third straight shutout appearance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Earning only three walks, Willmar (29-8) left nine baserunners stranded.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the ninth, the Huskies turned to right-handed closer Isaiah Piscitello, who allowed two hits to five batters. The freshman of Bryant &amp; Stratton has held opponents scoreless in each of his seven bullpen outings since July 31.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Potter (2-0) was credited with the victory, while Willmar&#8217;s Steven Brooks (4-1) was tagged with the loss on five runs allowed in 3 2\/3 innings.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Up next, Duluth will face the winner of the Great Lakes championship matchup between the Kalamazoo Growlers and the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters in the Northwoods League . A loss to the Fond du Lac Dock Spiders in 2018 prevented the Huskies\u2019 first-ever Northwoods League title.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">###<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Duluth Huskies are a member of the finest developmental league for elite college baseball players, the Northwoods League.
