The Portage Central High School graduate will be the third Portage Central alum joining the Growlers after his first season of Division One baseball this spring at Miami University in Ohio. MacDonald becomes the second Michigan native and Miami Redhawk to sign for the team this summer, with pitcher <a href=\"https:\/\/northwoodsleague.com\/kalamazoo-growlers\/growlers-keep-it-in-the-family-sign-carson-byers-to-team\/\">Carson Byers.<\/a> The right-handed batting outfielder was ranked as a top 10 recruit in the state of Michigan in the class of 2021; at Portage Central, MacDonald was team captain and led the team statistically in batting average on-base percentage and runs. Zach will have an entire season to develop into an even better player this spring under Miami head coach Danny Hayden in the always competitive MAC conference. MacDonald makes up the trio of Kalamazoo area natives on the 2022 roster alongside Carson Byers and <a href=\"https:\/\/northwoodsleague.com\/kalamazoo-growlers\/growlers-sign-another-local-kid-gavin-brasosky-joins-2022-roster\/\">Gavin Brasosky<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">###<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><em>The Kalamazoo Growlers are a member of the finest developmental league for elite college baseball players, the Northwoods League. The Northwoods League is the proven leader in the development of elite college baseball players. Having completed its\u2019 27<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0season, the Northwoods League is the largest organized baseball league in the world with 22 teams, drawing significantly more fans, in a friendly ballpark experience, than any league of its kind. A valuable training ground for coaches, umpires and front office staff, over 250 Northwoods League players have advanced to Major League Baseball, including three-time All-Star and 2016 Roberto Clemente Award winner Curtis Granderson, three-time Cy Young Award winner and World Series Champion Max Scherzer (WAS), two-time World Series Champions Ben Zobrist and Brandon Crawford (SFG) and World Series Champion Chris Sale (BOS). As well as 2019 Rookie of the Year and Home Run Derby Champion Pete Alonso (NYM) and MLB Gold Glove finalist and 2019 Second Team All-MLB shortstop Marcus Semien (TOR).
