Trusting the Process: How Trevor Johnson Turned a Quiet Year Into a Breakout<\/h1>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

As a true freshman at Duke, Trevor Johnson didn’t play in a single game. Zero. For a kid who’d been rated the No. 9 overall prospect in Pennsylvania and the No. 1 outfielder in his class, who’d hit .600 with 11 home runs as a junior and led the state in homers, who’d won a PIAA state title and four straight district championships, the jump to a power conference roster had been humbling in a way box scores rarely capture.<\/span><\/p>\n

The following spring wasn’t much different. Johnson appeared in just five games for Duke, totaling five plate appearances. He got one hit, a three-run home run.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

So when Johnson arrived in Kalamazoo for his first Northwoods League summer in 2025, he wasn’t arriving as a finished product looking for a stage. He was arriving as a guy trying to find his footing again. The numbers were modest by his own standard, four homers, a .223 average, but that wasn’t the whole story. What stood out to Growlers manager Cody Piechocki wasn’t what Johnson was doing at the plate that summer. It was everything around it: the way he showed up and worked, the way he carried himself in the clubhouse, the kind of teammate he was on the days the hits weren’t falling.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

When roster decisions came around for 2026, that mattered more than the numbers did. Piechocki had another highly touted Power 5 outfielder on the table, a name with just as much pedigree as Johnson’s. But Piechocki knew Johnson, knew his character, his makeup, and the way he approached the game day in and day out. He brought Johnson back.<\/p>\n

It didn’t come together right away. Coming off that brief stretch at Duke, Johnson again needed time to find his timing and rhythm early in the Growlers season. But he’s always been a hitter who trusts his approach, and Piechocki trusted it right along with him.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Then it clicked. Over an eight-game stretch right after the Northwoods League All-Star break, from July 10th through the 18th, Johnson hit .585, 15-for-28, with eight home runs, 10 walks, 27 RBI and 14 runs scored. It was the kind of run that changes a season.<\/span><\/p>\n

None of it happened because a coach fell for a recruiting profile. It happened because Coach Piechocki bet on the version of Trevor Johnson nobody was measuring in a box score, the one who showed up early, worked with purpose, and did things the right way every single day. In Kalamazoo, that bet paid off in a big way.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
