KENOSHA, Wis.<\/strong> \u2014After Canadian wildfires caused poor air quality and postponed the original meeting between the Rockford Rivets and Kenosha Kingfish on July 17, the teams squared off for a doubleheader at Historic Simmons Field on Saturday where they split the series. Rockford would take game one by a final score of 8-1, but the Kingfish would respond with a 7-1 victory in game two.<\/p>\n

Game one was all Rockford early, scoring in the first four innings to begin the contest. Before leaving the game with an apparent injury, Miguel Cantu would work a one-out walk, and would make his way around the bases in the following at-bat where Joey Appino would hit an RBI-triple to start the scoring. After Kingfish starting pitcher Matthew Pokorny was able to get the second out of the inning, he would allow a two-out double to Bryce Nevils, making the score 2-0 through the first.<\/p>\n

A two-out rally sparked more runs for the Rivets in the top half of the second, as they would double their lead, scoring two more runs. The runs would come home on a series of singles by Coby Neville, Connor Kave and Cantu’s replacement Beau Bloxdorf, making the score 4-0 Rivets.<\/p>\n

The Rivets would score one more in the third inning, increasing their lead to 5-0 before Pokorny’s day would come to an end. His final line: 2 2\/3 innings pitched, five runs allowed on six hits, two strikeouts and four walks.<\/p>\n

Jackson Banuelos came in to pitch in relief of Pokorny, and after a scoreless fifth inning the Rivets would tack on one more run in the top half of the sixth. Bloxdorf reached on his second hit of the day with a one-out double and later scored on Appino’s RBI-double, his second hit of the night.<\/p>\n

The Kingfish were able to avoid the shutout, matching the Rivets by also scoring one run in the sixth. A pair of bunt singles set the table with two runners on and no one out for the heart of the order. After Noah Alvarez grounded into a double play, Bennett Shealor’s RBI-single brought Will Matuszak home.<\/p>\n

That would be all for the Kingfish in game one as Gus Allred would complete the game, pitching the second complete game for the Rivets in the last two contests between the teams. Through his seven innings, Allred would allow just one run on six hits, striking out four and completing the 8-1 victory for Rockford.<\/p>\n

Game two started in similar fashion to the first with Rockford getting on the board first, scoring a run in the top of the first. Connor Kave was the leadoff man for the Rivets, and reached via a walk. After a stolen base and a flyout to right where Kave would tag, a wild pitch from Kingfish starting pitcher Sam Callow would bring in the game’s first run.<\/p>\n

The Kingfish were able to even the score in the bottom half with the help of a dropped fly ball in center field off the bat of Hunter Snyder that would bring in Noah Alvarez who reached base on a walk.<\/p>\n

Rockford looked to be threatening once more in the top of the second, having runners on first and second with no one out and bases loaded with one out. However, Callow was able to work around the jam, escaping unscathed after recording a strikeout and a flyout to keep the game tied.<\/p>\n

A three-run second inning put the Kingfish ahead for the first time in the doubleheader after a two-RBI single by Brian Gould. After Gould’s single the Kingfish were able to execute a double steal that would bring Alvarez home from an errant throw from Rockford’s catcher Ashton Zacher.<\/p>\n

Kenosha broke the game open in the third with another three-run inning. After Snyder led the inning off by reaching on an error, a fielders choice and a walk loaded the bases with one out for Will Matuszak. In game one, Matuszak collected two hits and kept his bat hot in game two with his second double of the summer, clearing the bases and putting the Kingfish ahead 7-1.<\/p>\n

After a shaky first inning where he allowed the singular run, Callow settled in nicely for the Kingfish, pitching four complete innings, allowing three hits and striking out three. Kaeb Stebbins and Brian Gould would combine to pitch the final three innings, combining to allow no runs and shut down the Rockford offense. Stebbins pitched both the fifth and sixth, allowing just two hits and Gould closed the game out in the seventh by striking out the side.<\/p>\n

After securing the 7-1 victory, the Kingfish snap their eight-game losing streak before heading to Rockford for one game and then coming back to Historic Simmons Field for their final homestand before the 2026 Northwoods League Playoffs begin. First pitch on Sunday is scheduled for 3:35 p.m. CDT.<\/p>\n
