\"\"<\/a>David Levey’s Journey<\/b><\/h2>\n

My cancer journey began on October 30, 2024, with an incidental finding in my lower back on an MRI. I was directed to call my primary doctor, who told me to make an appointment with a urologist. When speaking to the urologist\u2019s office, I was told that the earliest appointment was January 9, 2025, over two months from that day. Having called the urologist on a Friday, I was left to contemplate the \u201cwhat ifs\u201d over the weekend. I messaged my primary doctor with my concerns, he replied that Sunday. He said that once the urologist saw the results, my appointment would probably be moved up. Sure enough, the next day the urologist\u2019s office called and asked if I could come in on Wednesday.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the urology appointment, the doctor was very clear and concise with his diagnosis and plan of treatment. I learned that I had a tumor on my left kidney, which was most likely cancerous. Treatment for renal cancer was surgery with two possible outcomes \u2014 a partial nephrectomy where the tumor is removed, but the kidney is left intact, or a nephrectomy, which is the complete removal of the kidney. I was scheduled for surgery in mid-January during which the urologist removed the entire tumor and left my left kidney intact. Unfortunately, this was just the beginning of my cancer journey.<\/span><\/p>\n

During my post-surgical follow-up, the urologist referred me to an oncologist at the Aurora Cancer Care Center in Grafton. During my appointment, I was told that my blood tests showed an abnormal cell called M-Gus. In some patients, M-Gus can convert to a form of cancer known as Multiple Myeloma. It would take a couple of months, and a PET Scan to determine that something was having a negative effect on my body.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The PET Scan showed that my left femur was being eaten away; I needed to have a rod inserted to prevent a pathologic fracture of the longest bone in my body. The scan also showed cancerous lesions were present on my ribs, sacrum and right hip joint. During surgery, a biopsy was taken. There were several possibilities for what was happening to my bones, all of them cancerous. The first was that some renal cancer cells had broken off from my kidney tumor and colonized in my femur. The second was that it was bone cancer and the third was the conversion of the M-Gus to Multiple Myeloma. The first two types of cancer were terminal, with estimates ranging from one to three years. Fortunately, the biopsy showed that I had Multiple Myeloma, a cancer for which there is treatment, but no cure. Life estimate, with treatment, could range from five to thirty years, if the treatment was able to bring the cancer into remission.<\/span><\/p>\n

Initially, I received two weeks of radiation therapy, first to my right side and hip and then my left femur. I was placed on an oral chemotherapy, but my oncologist stopped it after 12 days due to a breakout of rashes on my neck, under my arms, in the crook of my elbows and on my inner thighs. For the next round, the chemo dosage was lowered. In addition to the oral chemo, I received weekly injections of another chemo drug and an <\/span>injection to help rebuild the calcium in my bones. However, the key to treatment was a stem cell transplant.<\/span><\/p>\n

I met with a stem cell transplant specialist at the Vince Lombardi Cancer Center at St. Lukes where it was determined that I was a good candidate for a transplant. On December 9, 2025, my stem cells were harvested in a procedure called plasmapheresis. These cells were then cleaned and frozen. A week later, I was admitted to St. Luke\u2019s isolation ward for the transplant. Prep work included a very strong chemotherapy to eliminate all my immunities, including those from childhood vaccinations. Over the next two days, I received my cleaned stem cells, which, hopefully, would rebuild my immunities and, along with chemotherapy, fight the cancerous lesions and cancer cells in my blood.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My rebirthday is December 18<\/span>th<\/span>. I was in isolation at St. Luke\u2019s for three weeks and remained in isolation at home until the end of March. During those first three weeks, I made daily trips to the Vince Lombardi Cancer Center for blood draws and occasional infusions of magnesium and potassium. Eventually, my trips were reduced to three times a week and finally, once a week.<\/span><\/p>\n

The stem cell transplant was successful, but I still take a low dose oral chemo maintenance drug and get monthly injections of another chemo med, along with the calcium building med. Blood tests and bone marrow biopsies show no sign of cancer, but I still have some lesions, which hopefully will continue to shrink. Until the lesions are of a particular size or disappear altogether, the doctors cannot say that I am in remission. The doctors do say that my progress has been positive and I am on the path to remission. I can only maintain the doctors\u2019 positivity and do all I can to continue to strike out cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n
