The Chinooks won their series with the Green Bay Bullfrogs on Sunday evening with a 4-2 win. Sunday’s matchup was the Chinooks last before the Northwoods League All-star break. With two of their most potent hitters being named All-Stars, Bre’ Kimbell<\/b> (Louisiana Tech<\/i>) and Eric Aguilera <\/b>(Illinois State<\/i>), the rest of the team will enjoy some much needed relaxation as they prepare for the final stretch of the season.<\/p>\n
“The rest will be greatly appreciated by everyone. All of us are going to doing something different; some will go home and some will just hang out,” said Head Coach John Vodenlich<\/b>. “We will return from the All-Star break and push for as many wins as we can and hopefully put a run together to finish-out the season.<\/p>\n
Jason Hoppe<\/b> (Mankato State<\/i>) <\/i>started his fourth game of the year and shut down the Bullfrogs at the plate. Through six innings, Hoppe<\/b> allowed no runs on six hits, one walk and four K’s.<\/p>\n
“I thought I didn’t pitch well. I would have like to go longer than six innings. My pitch count was higher than I would have liked for six innings, but I can’t complain about giving up no runs,” said Hoppe <\/b>on his winning performance.<\/p>\n
The Chinooks have had little trouble producing runs while at Kapco Park, and they continued that trend in the 1st<\/sup> inning, Sunday. Eric Aguilera <\/b>smoked a first-pitch fastball high over the right field wall for a two run home run; giving the Chinooks a 2-0 lead heading into top of the 2nd<\/sup>.<\/p>\n The run production came to a halt after the 1st<\/sup>, as neither team scored a run for the next five innings.<\/p>\n The Bullfrogs sent a team of bullpen pitchers to the mound throughout the game due to the fact they have four starting pitchers attending this week’s All-Star game. Bud Jeter started the game for the Bullfrogs and was replaced after three quick innings, giving up two runs on two hits, two walks and two K’s. In all, the Bullfrogs sent four pitchers to the mound.<\/p>\n Evin Einhardt <\/b>(Wabash Valley CC<\/i>) <\/i>relieved Hoppe <\/b>in the top of the 7th<\/sup> and lost the shutout when German Reyes <\/b>(Winston Salem<\/i>) <\/i>committed an error that allowed two runs to score, and tie the game at 2-2.<\/p>\n With a long standing lead erased, the Chinooks gathered themselves in the 7th<\/sup> to regain the lead. Scott Wilcox<\/b> (W. Kentucky<\/i>) reached first on a fielding error that scored Ryan Krill<\/b> (MSU<\/i>) <\/i>from third, followed by a Connor Lynch <\/b>(GA. Tech<\/i>) single to score Ryan Ussery <\/b>(UAB<\/i>).<\/p>\n Tim Verthien<\/b> (UW Lacrosse<\/i>) closed out the 9th<\/sup> to hold the 4-2 lead and hit the break with a win. The win puts the Chinooks at 9-8 and five games out of first place.
