MEQUON, Wi.- On Wednesday, July 29 the Lakeshore Chinooks and Traverse City Pit Spitters faced off for the final matchup of their two-game set. Taking the first game of the set on Tuesday in a 8-7 walk-off win, the Chinooks completed the sweep over the Pit Spitters Wednesday night, winning 7-4.<\/p>\n
Traverse City was the first team on the board Wednesday night, Scoring on a throwing error by Jack Counsell, as he tried to complete the 4-6-3 double play in the first inning.<\/p>\n
The Chinooks weren’t alone in the error department, as in the bottom half of the inning the Pit Spitters opened the game on defense with an error. Two batters later with Joshua Chairez on first base, Nolan Sandee brought the speedy Chairez in to score all the way from first on a RBI double.<\/p>\n
Sandee’s double was one of five Chinook extra-base hits in the win. Tied at one, the Chinooks took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the second inning on a Benjamin Green wild pitch. In the following inning, two more Chinook’ errors led to a Lucas Grantham RBI single to tie the game at two.<\/p>\n
While the second error of the inning led to a run scoring, earlier in the inning catcher Aukai Kea threw out a runner attempting to steal second, nullifying an error committed by third basemen Vinny Spotofora.<\/p>\n
Field Manager Brian Gregory referenced Kea’s play behind the dish when talking about the player’s abilities to back up their teammates after errors.<\/p>\n
\u201cErrors are going to happen\u2026 You try to minimize it as best you can, but I think it really exemplifies the team effort that if you fault we\u2019re going to pick you up on the other end,” Gregory said.<\/span><\/p>\n After committing three errors through the first three innings, the Chinooks went errorless the rest of the game. Tied 2-2 in the bottom of the third inning, the Chinooks took back the lead thanks to a two-out RBI single from David Mysza.<\/p>\n Mysza later added on to his effort, driving in his second run of the game on his second two-out RBI single of the game in the fifth. Hitting for a .310 batting average in 39 games, Mysza is currently on a seven-game hitting streak.<\/p>\n In his past three games played, Mysza is 6\/13 at the plate with seven RBIs. One of his RBI’s during this stretch came in the tenth inning in Tuesday’s win, as he hit a RBI single with the Chinooks down to their last out and down a run.<\/p>\n Extending innings and games for the Chinooks, Mysza said he tries to do less at the plate with runners in scoring position.<\/p>\n “You\u2019re already so amped up with runners in scoring position that you [have] to trust that you\u2019re going to want to do what your body wants to do,” Mysza said. “It\u2019s all about seeing the ball [and] calming down.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Extending their lead to two on Mysza’s base hit, solo home runs from Jack Counsell and Nick Allred in the seventh powered the Chinooks to victory. With the win, the Chinooks have outscored opponents 73-38 during their seven-game win streak.<\/p>\n \u201cWork ethic wise, everyone\u2019s always showing up and getting after it. I think some stuff is going our way in terms of we\u2019re all having good at bats,” Mysza said. “There\u2019s no holes in our lineup, [everyone’s] passing the baton.”<\/span><\/p>\n Behind the Chinooks’ steady offense, the Chinooks pitching staff kept the Pit Spitter’s bats relatively quiet.<\/p>\n After starting pitcher Dylan Weekly went three innings, allowing two runs (both unearned), the duo of Santino Pignotti-Wojtak and Christian McGrath allowed two earned runs in six innings pitched.<\/p>\n Pitching to a 5.05 ERA in the first half, the Chinooks bullpen in the second half has a 4.58 ERA in 120 innings. Through four games of their six-game homestand, they have excelled with a 3.24 ERA in 25 innings.
