Mallards Drop Game Two Against Rockford <\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

Rivets defeat Mallards 4-1 in game two of doubleheader<\/em><\/p>\n

Madison, Wis. \u2013 The Madison Mallards (15-11, 43-19) were defeated by the Rockford Rivets (9-18, 27-34) in game two of a doubleheader on Wednesday night at Warner Park. The Mallards offense was held in check all evening and a three-run seventh inning by the Rivets allowed Rockford to snap Madison\u2019s four-game win streak. A key two-run double by Rockford designated hitter Jimmy Burnette gave the Rivets the lead for good in the pivotal seventh inning.<\/p>\n

Turning Point<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

Mallards starter Jonah Smith<\/strong>(Creighton) made his first start of the season an effective one, lasting 4.0 innings while shutting out the Rivets, allowing only three hits and punching out a pair of batters. Smith gave way to Andrew Baker <\/strong>(Florida) who was effective and kept the Rivets off of the board in the fifth and sixth. Madison was able to open the scoring in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Trevor Schwecke <\/strong>(UW-Milwaukee) a few pitches after Garrett Kueber<\/strong>(Austin Peay) led off the inning with a double.<\/p>\n

However, the Rivets responded with a big seventh inning, scoring runs on a groundout back to Baker and on a two-run double down the left field line by Jimmy Burnette. The double chased Baker out of the ballgame and gave the Rivets a 3-1 advantage.<\/p>\n
