Kenosha, WI – March 21, 2013. Thursday afternoon at the Rotary Club of Kenosha West, the Northwoods League’s Kenosha Baseball announced the Name Your Team Contest finalists. \u00a0For the past two months area resients have been encouraged to submit their idea for the name of Kenosha’s newest team at www.kenoshanews.com.<\/a>\u00a0 More than 750 ideas for names of the team were submitted. \u00a0Here are the finalists accompanied by a brief explanation of the names tie to the area:<\/p>\n

Kenosha Comets – <\/strong>The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League team that played in Kenosha from 1943 to 1951 was named the Comets. \u00a0The team played at Simmons Field, where the new Kenosha Northwoods League team will call home, from 1948 thru 1951.<\/p>\n

Kenosha Esox<\/strong>\u00a0– Esox is the name of the category of fish that includes the Pike. \u00a0Esox also ties into one of the previous names for the City of Kenosha, Pike.<\/p>\n

Kenosha KingFish – <\/strong>KingFish offers a unique combination of a tie to Lake Michigan, royalty and even a little nod to the King, Elvis Presley.<\/p>\n

Kenosha Coopers – <\/strong>Traditionally, a cooper is someone who makes wooden staved vessels, bound together with hoops, for instance a beer barrel or cask. \u00a0The name also connects to the Cooper’s Hawk that is native to the area. \u00a0Lastly Samuel T. Cooper founded the iconic Kenosha company that became Jockey International.<\/p>\n

Kenosha Sockets – <\/strong>Sockets connects to the automotive history in Kenosha as well as Snap-On Tool Company, which is another iconic company based in Kenosha.<\/p>\n

Kenosha Lake Bears – <\/strong>Lake Bears is a memorable name that ties nicely to Lake Michigan and summertime in Wisconsin.<\/p>\n

The next phase of the contest will be a two week long fan vote on Kenoshanews.com. \u00a0The private results of the poll will be used to help Kenosha Baseball management determine the name of the team. \u00a0In August, the team is tentatively planning on hosting an event at Simmons Field to unveil the name and logo for the team as well as the first phase of improvements to Simmons Field.<\/p>\n

The Madison Mallards will host their season opener against the Eau Claire Express on May 29th at 7:05 pm at the “Duck Pond.”\u00a0 Single-game tickets will go on sale April 27th.<\/p>\n

The Madison Mallards are part of the 16-team Northwoods League.\u00a0 The Northwoods League has more teams, plays more games, and draws more fans than any other Summer Collegiate Baseball League in North America.\u00a0 In 2013, the Northwoods League will celebrate its 20th season.<\/p>\n
