Last night’s Box Score<\/a><\/p>\n

Madison, WI \u2013 July 17, 2009. After an emotional series sweep of La Crosse, the Mallards had a bit of a letdown in game one against Green Bay. Though give credit to Bullfrog starter Zach Varce (Portland), who allowed a run and struck out 10 over seven innings of work. Madison will seek a series split on Friday night when they meet again at 7:05 p.m. at the \u201cDuck Pond\u201d.<\/p>\n

Varce had received only two runs of support over his past four starts, but that trend changed on Thursday. The Bullfrogs gave him five runs before Varce even had the chance to make it to the mound. Their big first inning was highlighted by Kyle Robinson\u2019s (Indian River State) 3-run homer off the scoreboard in left field.<\/p>\n

Madison starter Derek Self (Louisville) didn\u2019t have his best stuff and an error in the first on a potential double play ball to shortstop Jacob Esch (Georgia Tech) didn\u2019t help. Only two of the six runs allowed by Self turned out to be earned and struck out three batters while walking none over five innings. The lone run by Madison came in the fifth on a Kurtis Muller (Iowa) RBI single. He and Jimmy Parque (St. John\u2019s) were the only two Mallards to record more than a hit in the game, slapping two singles each.<\/p>\n

Alex Rivers (Santa Clara) will try to lead the Mallards to a better result on Friday. The right-hander settled for the no-decision in his last start against Alexandria after allowing just a run over eight innings and leaving with a 3-1 lead. Rivers is 1-1 this year with a 2.00 ERA over 27 innings. Green Bay will send left-hander Brent Ebinger (Lambuth) to the mound with a 2-1 record and a 3.94 ERA over 29.2 innings pitched.<\/p>\n

With Thursday\u2019s loss, the Mallards (27-20 overall, 8-5 second half) fall a game behind first place La Crosse (30-17, 9-4) and into a second place tie with Waterloo (18-28, 8-5). Three games remain for the Mallards before the All-Star break and Manager C.J Thieleke would like his team to get on a roll heading into the final stretch of the season that follows.<\/p>\n

On Friday, Concordia University will present Rockin\u2019 Ray & the Amazing Skyy Dogs Night with high-flying dog exhibitions in-between innings. It\u2019s also the Northgate Shopping Center & Alexander Company full-sized baseball bat night (first 500 kids). Budweiser Uniform Can Coolers will also be handed out to the first 750 adults, 21 & over. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. prior to the first pitch at 7:05 p.m. <\/p>\n
