After a great start to the 2007 season, taking the first two games from the Eau Claire Express, the Mallards have hit a setback on their first road trip of the campaign, losing three straight in Wausau to the Wisconsin Woodchucks.<\/p>\n

The Mallards had several key opportunities to put the Woodchucks away and pick up a victory in Wausau, especially in the series finale, when Madison held a 4-2 lead going into the bottom of the ninth. The Mallards allowed the Woodchucks to send the game into extra innings and then complete the series sweep. <\/p>\n

Unfortunately, things do not get any easier for the Mallards, as they head to La Crosse (4-1) to take on the first-place Loggers, who have won three straight. <\/p>\n

It will be difficult for the Mallards’ bats to get going against arguably the toughest pitching staff in the Northwoods League. La Crosse holds a team ERA of 0.64 and have compiled three shutouts in five games played. <\/p>\n

Starters LHP Justin Walker, RHP Bryan Ruff and RHP Scott Kuhns have combined for 3-0 in 21.0 innings of work, allowing just 10 hits and striking out 19 batters. La Crosse\u2019s closer, RHP Don Erdall, is an important weapon in the Logger\u2019s bullpen. The tough reliever has recorded three saves in the past two days and leads the NWL with four total. <\/p>\n

On the other hand, the Mallards pitching staff could be as dominant in this series. La Crosse holds a team batting average of .199, which ranks 11th in the league. This could be a low-scoring series with a great spectacle of pitching from both ball clubs. <\/p>\n

For the Mallards, who have dropped below the .500 mark for the first time this season with a 2-3 overall mark, have gotten some help at the plate by DH Daniel Webb. Webb the lone player hitting over .300 for the Mallards (.333, 4-12) in four games is coming off a solid performance in Wausau, where he tallied two hits and an RBI. Webb\u2019s .429 OBP ranks second on the squad along with his two RBIs. <\/p>\n

Infielder Neil Medchill has had good road trip at the plate for the Mallards, going 3-for-7 (.429) with an RBI and double in his last two ball games. Both Webb and Medchill look to improve the Mallards team batting average of .236, as the Mallards will have an off day on Tuesday and get set to take on their division rival La Crosse at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday. <\/p>\n
