{"id":15794,"date":"2023-06-18T19:58:39","date_gmt":"2023-06-19T00:58:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/northwoodsleague.com\/mankato-moondogs\/?p=15794"},"modified":"2023-06-18T19:58:39","modified_gmt":"2023-06-19T00:58:39","slug":"late-homerun-dooms-moondogs-in-loss-to-stingers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/northwoodsleague.com\/mankato-moondogs\/2023\/06\/18\/late-homerun-dooms-moondogs-in-loss-to-stingers\/","title":{"rendered":"Late Homerun Dooms MoonDogs in Loss to Stingers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Mankato MoonDogs fell on Sunday afternoon to the Willmar Stingers 5-3 in front of a<br \/>\nSunday, Father\u2019s Day crowd at Bill Taunton Stadium in Willmar, MN.<\/p>\n<p>The MoonDogs jumped out to an early lead, but ultimately fell flat offensively and enabled<br \/>\nWillmar to score five of the game\u2019s final six runs to come from behind and defeat the black and<br \/>\norange.<\/p>\n<p>Mankato, for the second straight day, scored runs in the first and second innings. The former was<br \/>\nbrought in on an RBI single by <a href=\"https:\/\/northwoodsleague.com\/mankato-moondogs\/player\/?id=6814\">Ryan Nicholson<\/a> (Cincinnati) and the latter on an RBI single by<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/northwoodsleague.com\/mankato-moondogs\/player\/?id=6612\">Max Williams<\/a> (Alabama\/Florida State) to take a 2-0 lead after three half-innings.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Stingers were far from quitting. They brought home a run in the bottom of the<br \/>\nsecond on a bloop single to score a run, and then tied the game at two on a solo home run in the<br \/>\nfourth inning.<\/p>\n<p>In the sixth inning, Willmar began to threaten. Following a leadoff double, the Stingers managed<br \/>\nto get runners on the corners with one out, and a fly ball would enable that runner on third to tag<br \/>\nup on a sacrifice fly and score to give the Stingers their first lead at 3-2.<\/p>\n<p>Right-hander <a href=\"https:\/\/northwoodsleague.com\/mankato-moondogs\/player\/?id=5841\">R.J Elmore<\/a> (Grand Canyon) got the start for the black and orange, and despite<br \/>\ntaking the loss, delivered a quality start. The Mesa, AZ native twirled six innings, allowing five<br \/>\nhits and three runs while walking none and striking out four.<\/p>\n<p>The MoonDogs would tie the game up in the eighth inning, as <a href=\"https:\/\/northwoodsleague.com\/mankato-moondogs\/player\/?id=4502\">Kai Roberts<\/a> (Utah) would reach<br \/>\nthird base with one out, and Nicholson would deliver his second RBI of the day, a sacrifice fly to<br \/>\ntie the game at three.<\/p>\n<p>However, Willmar would answer. With one on and one out, Willmar three-hole hitter Gabe<br \/>\nSwansen would unload on a two-run home run to left field to break the tie and make the score 5-4.<\/p>\n<p>Despite having a chance in the ninth inning, Mankato would go down quietly and take the 5-3<br \/>\nloss.<\/p>\n<p>With the win, Willmar improved their NWL-best record to 15-3 while Mankato dropped to 10-<br \/>\n10. The MoonDogs keep their road trip rolling tomorrow as they travel to Bismarck to take on<br \/>\nthe Larks.
