Mankato, Minn. \u2013 In a wild game on Friday night, the Mankato MoonDogs soared past the Rochester Honkers by a final score of 16-6 to sweep their season opening series.<\/p>\n

The Honkers led off the scoring in the top of the second when MoonDog starter Kyle Richter (USC) walked the lead off batter and gave up a two run home run to Jimmy Koch (Florida Tech) to give the Honkers a 2-0 lead. The Honkers racked up four more runs in the top of the 2nd inning to take a 6-0 lead.<\/p>\n

The MoonDogs thundered back in the bottom of the 2nd inning thanks to a pitching meltdown by Honkers starter Jordan Jakubov (Kansas). Jakubov started the inning by hitting three straight MoonDogs batters and loading the bases. Jakubov then walked three more batters and was charged with four wild pitches, allowing the MoonDogs to score six runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning without registering a hit.<\/p>\n

The MoonDogs offense didn\u2019t slow down the rest of the game with Scott Sommerfeld (Missouri) and Blair Moore (San Diego State) leading the way for the MoonDogs. Sommerfeld finished the evening going 3 for 4 with a home run, three RBIs and three runs scored. Moore also went deep for the MoonDogs going 2 for 3 with four RBIs on the night.<\/p>\n

Jeff Rohrbach (St. Edwards) shut down the Honker batters after replacing Richter in the second inning. Rohrbach finished the game going 7 2\/3 innings, striking out five Honkers, and not allowing a run to pick up his first win of the season.<\/p>\n

The MoonDogs continue their home stand on Saturday night as they host the St. Cloud River Bats, with the first pitch at 6:05pm.
