Three Athletes from the Univeristy of Illinois Join 2023 Roster


MINOT, ND – The inaugural season roster is coming together for the Minot Hot Tots. On January 20th, the team began announcing players signed to their roster. The first athlete announced was Devin Jones from Creighton University. Now, coach Mitchell Gallagher is continuing to sign Division 1 athletes to the Hot Tot’s roster as the season is coming closer.


Staying in line with the Northwoods League’s dedication to providing high-caliber athletes with more opportunities to develop their skills, Gallagher has signed two pitchers and one catcher from the Univeristy of Illinois. The University of Illinois is a Divison I team in the Big Ten Conference, located in Champaign Illinois. The baseball program has seen much success in the last two decades with 5 NCAA Regional Tournament Appearances and one Championship in 2015, 3 Big Ten Conference 1st place finishes, and 2 Big Ten Tournament Championships in 2000 and 2011. The program has also produced 76 players that moved on to MLB careers since its founding. 


Gavin Schmitt, Tommy White, and Gavin Bennett are all University of Illinois athletes that have signed to take the field as Hot Tots come May. These players are going are freshmen and sophomore athletes who are looking for opportunities to grow as a player outside of their college season.


Gavin Schmitt is heading into his Sophomore right-handed pitcher, from Bolingbrook, Illinois. Before playing for the University of Illinois, he lettered for 3-years in varsity baseball at Plainfield East High School. He was ranked by Prep Baseball Report as #33 player recruit and #18 for pitching recruits from the state of Illinois. In his freshman season, Gavin pitched 4 innings and faced 19 batters. “I’m very excited to be part of the Hot Tots. I’m looking forward to an amazing summer season” said Schmitt. “I can’t wait to play with and meet lots of new people.”    


Tommy White is another right-handed pitcher that will be playing in a Hot Tot’s jersey this summer. Tommy is a freshman, from Albuquerque Nex Mexico, where he attended Cibola High School. While playing for Cibola, he threw a no-hitter in the first round of the Albuquerque Metro Baseball Championship and was ranked #25 in New Mexico by Max Preps. Tommy is looking forward to continuing to develop as a player after his first college season finishes. “Being able to play in a league with the reputation of the North Woods is such a blessing. I want to thank the Hot Tots organization and the city of Minot for giving me this opportunity to compete and develop in such a unique environment” said White. “I can’t wait to get started and compete for a championship.


Finally, from the University of Illinois, the Hot Tots signed on Gavin Bennett, a redshirt freshman catcher from Libertyville Illinois. Gavin played for Libertyville High School and was ranked by Prep Baseball Report #82 freshman recruit from Illinois, and #10 catcher in Illinois in 2021 Gavin is no stranger to high-caliber baseball, his father Gary Bennett played in Major League Baseball from 1995-2008. Gavin is ready to continue to train and grow as a player, “First off, I would like to thank the Minot Hot Tots organization for giving me the opportunity to continue to grow and develop as a baseball player as well as compete for a Northwoods championship” said Gavin. “I am looking forward to an exciting summer in Minot and can’t wait to get started.”


Gallagher is building the Hot Tots with players that are hungry to grow as athletes and teammates. “These 3 guys were huge signs for our team this summer. They come from an extremely competitive program that continues to produce quality players. Being able to get a pitching duo as well as a catcher who knows how they work will be huge in terms of their development” said Gallagher. “I’m excited for this group because these guys are excited about the opportunity ahead and excited to compete this summer.”
