After a tap of a cane on Phil&#039;s tree-trunk cage, his door was opened, and the animal emerged.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tHe was held aloft to cheers and applause. Phil did not respond, other than to blink. Placed on top of the trunk, he attempted to flee before his actions were closely analyzed.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tInterpreting Phil&#039;s behavior,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.groundhog.org\/\">the Groundhog Club<\/a>&nbsp;emcee proclaimed, &quot;There is no shadow to be cast! An early spring is my forecast!&quot;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tHe added, &quot;Take your jackets off, you&#039;re not going to need them!&quot;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tFew in the crowd followed that advice; the temperature this morning in Punxsutawney, Pa., was reported at 22 degrees.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe findings were independently verified by a groundhog in Canada, where&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ShubenacadieSam\">Shubenacadie Sam<\/a>&nbsp;also saw no shadow.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tOf course, other groundhogs are available. There&#039;s always&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.silive.com\/news\/index.ssf\/2016\/02\/groundhog_day_2016_watch_state.html#incart_river_index\">Staten Island Chuck<\/a>&nbsp;in New York and&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.yellowrivergameranch.com\/early-spring-2016\/\">General Beau Lee<\/a>&nbsp;in Georgia &mdash; both of whom concur with Phil.
