{"id":3224,"date":"2019-06-23T04:22:12","date_gmt":"2019-06-23T04:22:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/northwoodsleague.com\/rockford-rivets\/?p=3224"},"modified":"2019-06-23T05:38:12","modified_gmt":"2019-06-23T05:38:12","slug":"resilience-leads-rivets-over-kingfish-in-extra-innings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/northwoodsleague.com\/rockford-rivets\/2019\/06\/23\/resilience-leads-rivets-over-kingfish-in-extra-innings\/","title":{"rendered":"Resilience Leads Rivets Over Kingfish in Extra Innings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Grant Montgomery<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Rockford Rivets make it back to back wins on Saturday night as fans celebrate First Responders Night.\u00a0 The final score was 3-2 in 10 innings.\u00a0 Aaron Mann recorded his first win of the season for Rockford, as Tanner Fallon gets the loss for Kenosha.<\/p>\n<p>Jared Nelson, of the University of Dubuque started his first game of the season for the Rivets.\u00a0 He pitched a strong game on the evening as he ended with 5 IP, 2 ER, and 6 K.\u00a0 He ran into trouble in the first inning when he allowed both runs of his outing on the Nate Thomas RBI single.\u00a0 Manager Josh Keim spoke highly of the right hander.\u00a0 \u201cThe guy competes every time he is on the mound and he is never out of an at bat.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t have his best stuff tonight, but he fought and gave us all he could\u201d Keim said.<\/p>\n<p>The offense in this one for Rockford was tough to come by up until the 9th inning as they only reached base four times.\u00a0 When asked about the struggles coming from the Rivets batters, Keim said, \u201cI thought that we ran into a good arm\u201d talking about David Luethje of Kenosha.\u00a0 He also went on to say, \u201cI thought we squared a lot of balls up and our guys battled all night, but we didn\u2019t have anything to show for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was a completely different story for the Rivets as they entered the 9th inning.\u00a0 The first two Rivets batters of the inning reached on a single and a walk respectively.\u00a0 The game tying run came from the legs of Andrew Wilhite as he was able to beat out an infield single to the shortstop position.\u00a0 In the 10th inning, Mason Minzey came around to score the game winning run on an error by Kingfish catcher Brian Vance.\u00a0 As Nick Figus bunted a ball that dribbled in front of home plate, Vance fielded the ball cleanly but made an inaccurate throw that sailed over the first baseman&#8217;s head allowing the run to score.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the biggest reason the Rivets were able to stay competitive in this contest was the strong presence from the bullpen once again.\u00a0 After Jordan Nelson\u2019s exit, Hunter Keim came in to pitch two scoreless innings.\u00a0 It was then Tanner Prospt\u2019s turn to show off his arm as he came in to protect Rockford\u2019s lead with two scoreless innings himself.\u00a0 When asked about the strength of the bullpen, pitching coach Adam Carey said, \u201cThey were unreal.\u00a0 They did exactly what we expect of them every single game.\u00a0 They came through in a big way.\u201d\u00a0 Aaron Mann then came in and recorded the win on the night.<\/p>\n<p>The Rockford Rivets take this win into a match-up against the Kingfish on Sunday in Kenosha as they wrap up the series.\u00a0 The Rivets take a 13-12 record into this contest.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>The Rockford Rivets are a member of the finest developmental league for elite college baseball players, the Northwoods League.
