LOVES PARK, IL — Sports camps are the thing to do in the summer, but due to the pandemic they have all been on hold for the beginning of the season. But with Illinois restrictions starting to lift, the Rockford Rivets are now able to begin their second annual youth baseball clinic for ages 7-16.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Rivets coaches and staff spent time with 60 baseball campers Tuesday morning at stations, learning different fundamentals of the game. Kids learned skills like how to throw, base running, and the perfect bunt technique. Many parents are excited their children are finally able to get out and enjoy the game of baseball.\u00a0 <\/span>Parents and campers alike are happy to be around baseball after the pandemic halted all youth sports for more than two months.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s very excited because he has been waiting for baseball all summer,\u201d Armando Huerta said about his son, Andrew, a sixth grader participating in this year\u2019s clinic. \u201cIt\u2019s freedom and they get to see all of their friends here which makes everyone happy.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Rockford Rivets are a member of the finest developmental league for elite college baseball players, the Northwoods League. The Northwoods League is the proven leader in the development of elite college baseball players. Having completed its\u2019 26<\/i>th<\/i>\u00a0season, the Northwoods League is the largest organized baseball league in the world with 22 teams, drawing significantly more fans, in a friendly ballpark experience, than any league of its kind. A valuable training ground for coaches, umpires and front office staff, over 230 Northwoods League players have advanced to Major League Baseball, including three-time All-Star and 2016 Roberto Clemente Award winner Curtis Granderson, three-time Cy Young Award winner and World Series Champion Max Scherzer (WAS), two-time World Series Champions Ben Zobrist (CHC) and Brandon Crawford (SFG) and World Series Champion Chris Sale (BOS). As well as 2019 Rookie of the Year and Home Run Derby Champion Pete Alonso (NYM) and MLB All-Star Jordan Zimmermann (DET). All league games are viewable live via the Northwoods League website.
