A regular season record crowd of 2,856 school day fans cheered on the Thunder Bay Border Cats to their fourth straight win as the home side rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to upend the Waterloo Bucks 9-8 at Port Arthur Stadium.\u00a0 The morning game on Tuesday was the opener of a split doubleheader between the two clubs as part of their four-game series. The Cats pushed the final two runs across thanks to a wild pitch and a hit batter as Logan Johnstone (Gonzaga University) was plunked with two-out and the bases loaded.\u00a0 The Bucks had erased a 7-3 Thunder Bay lead by scoring four times in the top of the eighth to go ahead 8-7.<\/div>\n

Newcomer Travis Chestnut (Texas A&M University) led the Cats at the plate, going 3-for-5, with two runs scored, while creating havoc on the base paths with three stolen bases.\u00a0 Tyler Kehoe (South Alabama) went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in, while Trey Lewis (South Alabama) and Easton Culp (Lamar University) also collected two hits as the Cats upped their record to 10-8.<\/div>\n

Caleb Bunch (Ranger College) picked up the win in relief to improve to 2-0 as he pitched 1 2\/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts.\u00a0 The Cats and Bucks play the second game of their twinbill Tuesday night at 6:35pm.\u00a0 Righthander Robert Spencer (Texas A&M University-Kingsville) gets the start for Thunder Bay.\u00a0 The series concludes on Wednesday night at 6:35pm and Thunder Bay’s Jack Pineau the scheduled starter on the mound for the Border Cats.<\/div>\n

A valuable training ground for coaches, umpires, and front office staff, over 325 Northwoods League players have advanced to Major League Baseball, including three-time All-Star and 2016 Roberto Clemente Award winner Curtis Granderson, three-time Cy Young Award winner and World Series Champion Max Scherzer (NYM), two-time World Series Champions Ben Zobrist and Brandon Crawford (SFG) and World Series Champion Chris Sale (BOS). As well as 2019 Rookie of the Year and 2019\/2021 Home Run Derby Champion Pete Alonso (NYM) and 2021 All-Star, MLB Gold Glove winner and 2019 Second Team All-MLB shortstop Marcus Semien (TEX).
