The Thunder Bay Border Cats ran their winning streak to six games on Wednesday before 776 fans at Port Arthur Stadium and in the process took over top spot in the Great Plains East Division by percentage points over the Duluth Huskies and Rochester Honkers. Travis Chestnut (Texas A&M University) launched a go ahead two-run homer in the fourth inning to complete the scoring and the Cats went on to beat the Waterloo Bucks 5-4 to sweep the four-game series.\u00a0 Tyler Kehoe (South Alabama) went 2-for-4 with a run batted in while Trey Lewis (South Alabama) had an RBI double and knocked in two runs as Thunder Bay improved its record to 12-8.<\/div>\n

Thunder Bay native Jack Pineau (Creighton University) started for the Cats and pitched into the fourth inning allowing four runs (two earned runs), with four strikeouts.\u00a0 Fellow Canadian Griffin Catto (Jefferson College) got the win in relief by tossing 3 1\/3 scoreless innings and Kannon Carr (Jefferson College) got the final six outs for his third save.<\/div>\n

The Border Cats now hit for the road for six games as they open a four-game series on Thursday night in Lacrosse.\u00a0 Lefthander Peyton Leon (Grayson College) will pitch the opener against the last place Loggers.<\/div>\n

A valuable training ground for coaches, umpires, and front office staff, over 325 Northwoods League players have advanced to Major League Baseball, including three-time All-Star and 2016 Roberto Clemente Award winner Curtis Granderson, three-time Cy Young Award winner and World Series Champion Max Scherzer (NYM), two-time World Series Champions Ben Zobrist and Brandon Crawford (SFG) and World Series Champion Chris Sale (BOS). As well as 2019 Rookie of the Year and 2019\/2021 Home Run Derby Champion Pete Alonso (NYM) and 2021 All-Star, MLB Gold Glove winner and 2019 Second Team All-MLB shortstop Marcus Semien (TEX).
