The Thunder Bay Border Cats returned home on Monday and returned to the win column with an 8-5 victory over the Lacrosse Loggers before 952 fans at Port Arthur Stadium.\u00a0 Patrick Engskov (University of Oklahoma) ignited the Border Cats offence, by homering for the second straight night, a two-run blast in the first inning as Thunder Bay improved its overall record to 23-30.\u00a0 The Cats blew the game open with a six-run third inning keyed by a two-run single by Blake Warner (Viterbo University) and a two-run double off the bat of Brayden Kuriger (Nicholls State University).\u00a0 Tyler Kehoe (University of South Alabama) led the Cats offensively with a 4-for-4 night and a run scored.<\/div>\n

Riely Hunsaker (Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi) started for Thunder Bay and picked up his first win of the season.\u00a0 The righthander pitched 5 1\/3 innings and gave up just an unearned run on six hits, while striking out three.\u00a0 Michael Pirrello (University of California-Irvine) tossed 2 2\/3 innings of scoreless relief with three strikeouts and Jacob Gajic (Northwest Missouri State University) got the final two outs to seal the win as the Loggers made things interesting by scoring three times in the ninth inning.<\/div>\n
Following an off-day on Tuesday, the two teams wrap up the series Wednesday at 6:35pm at Port Arthur Stadium.\u00a0 It’s Weenie Wednesday with 2-for-1 hot dogs presented by Superior Foods.\u00a0 It also “Ladies Night” with a post-game diamond dig sponsored by Alex & Vince Mirabelli with Remax\/First Choice Realty.\u00a0 The first 200 ladies thru the games (18-years of age and older), will come onto the field after the game for a chance to dig for a pair of diamond earrings valued at $1000.<\/div>\n

A valuable training ground for coaches, umpires, and front office staff, over 325 Northwoods League players have advanced to Major League Baseball, including three-time All-Star and 2016 Roberto Clemente Award winner Curtis Granderson, three-time Cy Young Award winner and World Series Champion Max Scherzer (NYM), two-time World Series Champions Ben Zobrist and Brandon Crawford (SFG) and World Series Champion Chris Sale (BOS). As well as 2019 Rookie of the Year and 2019\/2021 Home Run Derby Champion Pete Alonso (NYM) and 2021 All-Star, MLB Gold Glove winner and 2019 Second Team All-MLB shortstop Marcus Semien (TEX).
