{"id":16720,"date":"2025-07-15T16:47:21","date_gmt":"2025-07-15T20:47:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/northwoodsleague.com\/thunder-bay-border-cats\/?p=16720"},"modified":"2025-07-15T16:51:22","modified_gmt":"2025-07-15T20:51:22","slug":"former-border-cats-selected","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/northwoodsleague.com\/thunder-bay-border-cats\/2025\/07\/15\/former-border-cats-selected\/","title":{"rendered":"FORMER BORDER CATS SELECTED IN MLB DRAFT"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thunder Bay, Ont., &#8211; The Thunder Bay Border Cats are proud to announce a pair of former pitchers from the 2023 Northwoods League season were selected in the 2025 Major League Baseball Draft.\u00a0 Pitchers Riely Hunsaker (Lamar University) and Peyton Fosher (University of Nevada) were both chosen on the final day of the draft on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Hunsaker, a 22-year-old righthander from Peculiar, Missouri, was taken in the 16<sup>th<\/sup> round, 481<sup>st<\/sup> overall, by the Chicago Cubs.\u00a0 Hunsaker appeared in four games for the Border Cats during the 2023 season and compiled a 1-1 record with a 6.16 earned run average, striking out 18 batters in 19 innings.<\/p>\n<p>Fosher, a 22-year-old righthander from Tomball, Texas, was chosen in the 19<sup>th<\/sup> round, 558<sup>th<\/sup> overall, by the Miami Marlins.\u00a0 Fosher pitched in eight games for Thunder Bay in 2023 and had a 2-1 record with a 4.24 ERA and 13 strikeouts over 23.1 innings.<\/p>\n<p>A total of 78 former Northwoods League players were selected over the 20 rounds of the MLB Draft, with outfielder Brendan Summerhill (University of Arizona) the top pick, going in the first round, 42<sup>nd<\/sup> overall, to the Tampa Bay Rays.\u00a0 Summerhill spent the 2022 season with the Traverse City Pit Spitters and the 2023 campaign with the Rockford Rivets.<\/p>\n<p><em>###<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The Thunder Bay Border Cats are a member of the finest developmental league for elite college baseball players, the Northwoods League. The Northwoods League is the proven leader in the development of elite college baseball players. Now in its\u2019 32<sup>nd<\/sup>\u00a0season, the Northwoods League is the largest organized baseball league in history with 24 teams, drawing significantly more fans, in a friendly ballpark experience, than any league of its kind. A valuable training ground for coaches, umpires, and front office staff, nearly 2400 NWL alums have been drafted and over 400 Northwoods League players have advanced to Major League Baseball, including three-time All-Star and 2016 Roberto Clemente Award winner Curtis Granderson, three-time Cy Young Award winner and World Series Champion Max Scherzer (TOR), two-time World Series Champions Ben Zobrist and Brandon Crawford and World Series Champion Chris Sale (ATL). As well as 2019 Rookie of the Year and 2019\/2021 Home Run Derby Champion Pete Alonso (NYM) and 2023 World Series Champion, MLB All-Star, MLB Gold Glove, two-time Silver Slugger winner and two-time All-MLB first team shortstop Marcus Semien (TEX).
