{"id":16746,"date":"2025-07-27T21:06:04","date_gmt":"2025-07-28T01:06:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/northwoodsleague.com\/thunder-bay-border-cats\/?p=16746"},"modified":"2025-07-27T21:08:32","modified_gmt":"2025-07-28T01:08:32","slug":"cats-set-to-host-huskies-on-tuesday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/northwoodsleague.com\/thunder-bay-border-cats\/2025\/07\/27\/cats-set-to-host-huskies-on-tuesday\/","title":{"rendered":"CATS SET TO HOST HUSKIES ON TUESDAY"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Thunder Bay Border Cats couldn\u2019t replicate their record-setting performance from one night earlier, falling to the Eau Claire Express on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The Express scratched out a pair of runs in each of the third and seventh innings to hand the Border Cats a 4-0 home loss at Port Arthur Stadium.<\/p>\n<p>Eau Claire\u2019s McGwire Turner drove in three runs for the visitors.<\/p>\n<p>Express starting pitcher Dawson Hargrove threw five shutout innings, striking out eight batters. Thunder Bay starter Jackson Irwin (Bellarmine University) went four innings, allowing two runs, while striking out three.<\/p>\n<p>Border Cats slugger Jeremy Sheffield (Georgetown University) had one of the Border Cats three hits in the game. Sheffield has hits in eight of his last nine contests.<\/p>\n<p>Thunder Bay\u2019s overall record now stands at 31-27, and 10-14 in the second half.<\/p>\n<p>The Border Cats have an off day on Monday before continuing the homestand on Tuesday against the Great Plains East division second-half leading Duluth Huskies. Thunder Bay has won three of the first four matchups in the Superior Cup against Duluth.<\/p>\n<p><em>###<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The Thunder Bay Border Cats are a member of the finest developmental league for elite college baseball players, the Northwoods League. The Northwoods League is the proven leader in the development of elite college baseball players. Entering its\u2019 32nd season, the Northwoods League is the largest organized baseball league in history with 24 teams, drawing significantly more fans, in a friendly ballpark experience, than any league of its kind. A valuable training ground for coaches, umpires, and front office staff, nearly 2400 NWL alums have been drafted and over 380 Northwoods League players have advanced to Major League Baseball, including three-time All-Star and 2016 Roberto Clemente Award winner Curtis Granderson, three-time Cy Young Award winner and World Series Champion Max Scherzer (TOR), two-time World Series Champions Ben Zobrist and Brandon Crawford and World Series Champion Chris Sale (ATL). As well as 2019 Rookie of the Year and 2019\/2021 Home Run Derby Champion Pete Alonso (NYM) and 2023 World Series Champion, MLB All-Star, MLB Gold Glove, two-time Silver Slugger winner and two-time All-MLB first team shortstop Marcus Semien (TEX).
