Wausau Caps off 21-19 Regular Season<\/b><\/p>\n
WAUSAU, WI. – The Wausau Ignite have clinched a spot in the 2026 Northwoods League Softball playoffs.<\/span><\/p>\n In just their second year as a franchise and under head coach Jas Estrada, the Ignite have gone from a last-place finish in 2025 to competing for a championship in 2026.<\/span><\/p>\n Wausau finished the regular season 21-19, improving by nine wins from its inaugural campaign, when it posted a 12-30 record.<\/span><\/p>\n The turnaround was fueled by strong team play and resilience, with the Ignite returning six players from their first season. One of those returners, Mia Johnson of UW-Parkside, has cemented herself in Northwoods League history. Johnson currently leads the league with 19 home runs after breaking the previous record of 15 earlier this season.<\/span><\/p>\n The Ignite also benefited from key additions to the roster, including pitcher Zoey Mills of Northwestern State. At the conclusion of the regular season, Mills leads the league with 10 wins and eight complete games while posting the league’s third-best ERA at 4.03.<\/span><\/p>\n Season Highlights<\/b><\/p>\n The season began slowly for the Ignite, who lost their first three games. Wausau quickly established itself as a contender, however, by snapping the Madison Nightmares’ 16-game winning streak to open the season. The Ignite ultimately handed Madison four of its six losses during the 2026 campaign.<\/span><\/p>\n A razor-thin playoff race among Grand Forks, La Crosse and Wausau captivated the league during the final two weeks of the regular season. The three teams spent much of that stretch separated by just one game while competing for the final playoff berth after Madison had already secured one of the two championship-series spots.<\/span><\/p>\n Up Next<\/b><\/p>\n The Ignite will face the Madison Nightmares on Monday, Aug. 3, in Game 1 of the 2026 Northwoods League Softball playoffs. After several closely contested matchups throughout the season, the teams will meet once more in a best-of-three series.<\/span><\/p>\n Game 1 will be played at Athletic Park in Wausau.
