WILLMAR–Well, it wasn’t quite the storybook ending that Stingers fans may have hoped for, but despite the score of Thursday night’s franchise and home opening game, things couldn’t have gone much better for residents of Stinger nation.  Bill Taunton Stadium, heretofor known as the \\”Bee Hive,\\” was rocking from Paul Molitor’s ceremonial first pitch around 7:05, to the postgame fireworks extravaganza at quarter past ten.
 
On the mound for the Stingers in their first-ever game was Nebraska-Kearney Junior Roy Metter.  \\”Meat,\\” as he’s been dubbed by pitching coach Tyler Shepple, went four and a third innings giving up four runs and striking out two to register the loss, while his counterpart Jason Van Skike scattered seven hits over five and a third, striking out four and getting the \\”W.\\”
 
Fittingly, the first hit and run scored by a Stinger both came courtesy of former Willmar Cardinal and current St. Cloud State Husky Jordan Smith.  The rightfielder’s infield single to lead off the second inning sparked a three run frame, accounting for all the Stingers’ scoring on the night.
