Dickinson, N.D. – The Willmar Stingers (35-30) fell 8-7 in the series opener to the Badlands Big Sticks (30-35).<\/span><\/p>\n

In the opening inning, Blake Beheler and Cougar Cooke both notched RBI hits to give the home sqaud an early 2-0. The next half inning Willmar’s Max Buettenback reached first on a fielding error which Levi Maddela followed by connecting for a two-run bomb to make the score even. It was the Wailuku, Hawaii native’s first home run as a Stinger.<\/p>\n

The Big Sticks answered with three runs in the bottom half behind a big Samson Pugh two-run double which contributed to their new 5-2 lead.<\/p>\n

Merrick Rapoza drove in Landon Lowe in the 3rd with an RBI single to make it a 5-3 ballgame. Both teams posted one run in the 5th inning for Badlands to be ahead 6-4.<\/p>\n

Blake Beheler launched a two-run home run to centerfield in the bottom of the 6th to increase the home team’s lead to 8-4. Beheler was also the final batter\u00a0 for Stingers starter Brandon Mikos, who finished five and two-thirds innings, allowing ten hits, eight earned runs, one walk, and struck out eight. He was replaced by Josh Kirchoff.<\/p>\n

A fielding error by the Big Sticks in the 7th led to three unearned runs coming across the plate for the Stingers to pull within 8-7. Kai Gonzaga walked with the bases loaded and Maddela recorded an RBI groundout in the frame.<\/p>\n

Mason Lunzman got the start for Badlands and was pulled during the seventh inning after officially going six and one-third inning, allowing nine hits, seven runs(four earned), two walks, and struck out four. He was replaced by Justin Schramm who picked up the save for the Big Sticks. He posted two and two-thirds innings, walked two, and struck out three in their 8-7 win.<\/p>\n

The win was credited to Lunzman and Mikos was charged with the loss.<\/p>\n

Josh Kirchoff was named the Les Schwab Tires Player of the Game after throwing two and one-third innings while allowing one baserunner and sendiing five Big Sticks on strikes.<\/p>\n

The Stingers will play the final game of their North Dakota Road Trip tomorrow night against the same Badlands squad. First pitch at Dakota Community Bank & Trust Ballpark is scheduled for 7:35 p.m. CT.<\/p>\n
