La Crosse, WIS-  Simon Mathews and Kaylor Chafin held the La Crosse Loggers scoreless through eight innings at Copeland Park Saturday, and the Wisconsin Woodchucks went on to win 4-1.

Mathews gave up just three hits and struck out six in a five-inning start, which earned him the victory. In a long relief appearance of three innings, Chafin allowed three hits and fanned three. Connor Kelly would take the final frame and allow one run on one hit.

The Woodchucks’ first run came in the third inning. Al Molina singled, Jared Oliva walked and then Yusuke Akitoshi singled to score Molina and give the Chucks a 1-0 lead.

Wisconsin extended their lead with two more runs in the sixth. Connor Heady singled, and LJ hatch was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Taylor Kohwley singled home Heady, and Ryan Day plated Hatch with a fielder’s choice

La Crosse cost themselves in the field in the seventh. The Loggers committed three errors in the frame, allowing one run to score and handing the Chucks a 4-0 edge. 

The Woodchucks and Loggers play again tomorrow at Copeland Park with first pitch at 5:05 p.m.
