Greg Cary to become the 3rd Head Coach in Habaneros History

MANKATO, MN. – The Mankato Habaneros are excited to announce Greg Cary, as the new Head Coach of the Mankato Habaneros for the 2026 Season.

The Habaneros are excited to announce the hiring of new head coach Gregory Cary, a proven leader with a track record of success across multiple levels of college softball.

Originally from Corning, New York, Cary got his start at Corning Community College, where he earned his associate’s degree, before completing his bachelor’s at the State University of New York at Purchase College.

Now entering his ninth season as a head coach, Cary’s built an impressive resume that includes time at the NJCAA Division II, NJCAA Division I, NCAA Division III, and NAIA levels. Along the way, he has earned a fourth-place finish at the 2021 NAIA National Championship and has been named 2022 Coach of the Year in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference.

He is currently the head coach at Hill College in Hillsboro, Texas. In just a short amount of time, he has made a big impact. As he coaches his second season, he has helped to spark one of the biggest turnarounds in Texas JUCO softball with a record of 20 – 30. His team is improving the win total by 13 games, the highest increase in the region.

Hill College softball has also set multiple program records this season, including walks, sacrifice flies, stolen bases, and fielding percentage, which are numbers not seen since at least 2015. With several games still to play, even more achievements are within reach.

Coach Cary said he is “excited to take on a new challenge,” and to “learn, grow, and help players get to their maximum potential.”

The Habaneros believe his energy, experience, and focus on development will make an immediate impact and help move the program forward.
