(Grand Forks, ND) – The Spitfires Softball Team, in partnership with Oxford Realty, is proud to
announce Home Runs for Roots, a new community-driven initiative that connects the excitement of
softball at Albrecht Field with the long-term growth and sustainability of the Grand Forks community.
Through Home Runs for Roots, every home run hit during the season will result in the planting of a
new tree in the Grand Forks area. For each home run, Oxford Realty will sponsor the planting of
one tree, creating a meaningful connection between on-field moments and off-field impact.
“This initiative is about more than softball,” said Gabby Knopik, Spitfires Marketing Manager. “It’s
about giving back to the community that supports us and creating something lasting that grows
alongside our team.”
Trees will be planted in collaboration with local parks departments, neighborhood associations, and
individual homeowners. Community members will have the opportunity to nominate yards or public
spaces where trees can be planted, allowing fans to quite literally grow with the team throughout the
season.
The Spitfires will track every home run and tree to be planted through a Home Runs for Roots Tree
Tracker, available online and displayed through in-stadium signage at Albrecht Field so fans can
follow along on the progress. The tracker will update all season long, showcasing the collective
impact created by players, fans, and community partners.
At the conclusion of each season, the initiative will culminate in a Home Runs for Roots Tree
Planting Day, a special community event where members of the Spitfires Softball Team and Oxford
Realty will come together to plant the trees earned throughout the season.
“Home Runs for Roots is a unique way to support both local athletics and the long-term beauty and
sustainability of our city,” says Roberto Lemus, Spitfires General Manager.
Additional details about tree nominations, the Tree Tracker, and Tree Planting Day will be
announced throughout this spring and summer. Fans are encouraged to follow the Spitfires on
social media and visit the team’s website for updates.
