The Bombers won the first series of the 2011 season Thursday night in a 4-3 win over the visiting Waterloo Bucks.

Like opening night, the game’s first two innings were scoreless, but the Bucks struck in the third when Drew Walsh scored from third base on a throwing error to first base. But the Bombers fought back in the home half when Jordan Dean used his speed and went from first base to third on a passed ball and was brought home by Jimmy Martinez on a double into right field. Martinez has RBI in both games this season.

Battle Creek went on to score individual runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth, with help from Waterloo’s defense: the Bucks committed four late-game errors. Bryce Redeker also received RBI credit on a single in the fifth.

Matt Dearden threw six solid innings for the Bombers, allowing just two runs and three hits, striking two and walking one along the way. Alex Tukey saw action for the first time when he tossed the seventh inning, and Eastern Michigan’s Kristin Calibuso picked up the save in the final two frames, fanning four batters.

Battle Creek will attempt to sweep Waterloo in tomorrow night’s series finale before heading on a five-game road trip in Wisconsin at Wisconsin Rapids and Green Bay. Fans can watch the game at 7:05pm live on www.nwltickets.com.
