The Honeybees grabbed their first-ever home doubleheader sweep yesterday against the LaCrosse Steam and are looking to repeat that success for a single game today. Minot hit three home runs in their two games yesterday, bringing them to seven on the season.
Game one was a 15-10 Minot win that saw fireworks from both teams. Three Honeybee players recorded three RBI yesterday in a late-inning comeback; Taylor Chillingworth, Olivia Hernandez, and Virginia Mambelli. Chillingworth also hit a home run in the effort. In an interview with Minot head coach, Craig Montvidas, he said that the team came out a bit flat in game one, but once one player found success, the floodgates just opened. The Honeybees had zero hits through the first four innings of the game but then proceeded to put up a nine-spot in the fifth. This was followed by six more insurance runs in the sixth.
The Honeybees were anything but flat to start game two. They scored in the first three innings of that one to take an 8-4 lead into the fourth. Yet another offensive onslaught in the fifth and sixth innings led to a run-rule victory for Minot, 15-5. Olivia Lenzen and Shayna Myshrall both knocked home runs to contribute in the back end of the sweep.
Coach Montvidas said that his team’s approach at the plate is about quality and not quantity. When speaking to him following thirty runs in twelve innings, the question had to be asked; “what is your team’s approach at the plate?” He said that he doesn’t want his players to be worried about the count early in their at-bats. Instead, he wants them to wait for their pitch and to give it a ride when it comes. Going into today, he wants his team to continue to surf on the momentum they have gained. With a 3-2 record and a +15 run differential, they are very much in contention in this young Northwoods League softball season.
This afternoon’s game between the Minot Honeybees and LaCrosse Steam is set to begin at 1:05. Come to Corbett Field to catch the action or watch online on Northwoods League+.
