Just a week and a half of games remain for teams across Northwoods League Softball. For the Minot Honeybees, it’s down to eight. Yesterday’s 10-0 win over Mankato rekindled the postseason push after the Honeybees lost their most recent series. Here’s what you need to know about the next few days as Minot looks to punch a playoff ticket.
We’ll start at the top. Nobody has been more dominant this season than the Madison Night Mares. A fifteen game win streak has pushed the Night Mares’ record to 28-5, just three wins off the Northwoods League Softball record. With their season-long success, Madison has already secured a spot in the championship series as well as home-field advantage for games two and three of the final.
That leaves just one spot up for grabs. It will come down to Minot and Mankato over the final two weeks. Miraculously, the Honeybees and Habaneros are scheduled to play six times over five days late in the season. To this point, Minot has gone 2-1 against Mankato in a series that started on Sunday. One game in particular threw a small wrench in the whole race. In game three in Mankato, the Honeybees used an illegal pitcher and had to forfeit a win.
With the series heading to Minot yesterday, the Honeybees had a 1.5-game lead over the Habaneros, with last night’s win bringing the lead to 2.5 games. A series win by Thursday night would put the Honeybees in prime position to make the postseason. It will all come down to how the final week pans out, though. Mankato will square off with league-leading Madison with a desperate need to pull off the upset. The Honeybees still have a trip to Wausau, Wisconsin on the schedule before returning home to play the Night Mares in the regular season finale.
It’s a tight race between Minot and Mankato. Make sure you’re there at Corbett Field to witness the action during tonight’s double header showdown!
