Jonathan Diaz was called up late Monday night from Tripple-A Buffalo to play in Tuesday's game against the Boston Red Sox. The following is the story from the Toronto Blue Jay's website courtsey of Gregor Chisholm.

BOSTON — The Blue Jays placed shortstop Jose Reyes on the 15-day disabled list with a cracked rib late Monday night, and they will purchase the contract of infielder Jonathan Diaz from Triple-A Buffalo prior to Tuesday's game against the Red Sox.

Reyes recently suffered a cracked rib, and after missing a three-game series against the Braves, he had been attempting to play through the pain. He returned to the lineup on April 21 and hit exclusively from the right side, where the rib caused less discomfort in the batter's box.

Even as a right-handed hitter, though, it became clear over time that Reyes wasn't quite himself. The veteran infielder had three hits in 23 at-bats, and he struck out twice against the Red Sox on Monday night.

The Blue Jays likely will go with a platoon of Ryan Goins and Diaz at shortstop during Reyes' absence. Both players provide well-above-average defence up the middle, but historically haven't offered much with the bat. There's no question that losing Reyes will be a blow to a lineup that is already dealing with a banged up Jose Bautista.

Diaz was hitting .178 (8-for-45) with two extra-base hits in 16 games for Triple-A Buffalo this season. He also filled in for Reyes last April when he was placed on the DL with a strained hamstring.
