La Crosse Steam Names Legendary Coach Tim Kiernan as Inaugural Skipper

Hall of Famer Set to Lead First Women’s Softball Team in La Crosse

 

LA CROSSE, WI –  One week after unveiling their team name and logo, the La Crosse Steam is back at it again building for their inaugural season in the Northwoods Softball League. Today team officials announced the hiring of Tim Kiernan as the team’s first-ever head coach. Coach Kiernan has an extensive background and successful history of coaching and will be valuable to the program in the upcoming season.

With over 28 years of softball coaching experience and 6 of those years being in professional softball, Coach Kiernan has an impressive resume. “I’m very excited about coaching the La Crosse Steam in the Northwoods League,” said Coach Kiernan. “The fans will enjoy the talent of the players in the league.”

With an overall coaching record of 2962-340 and a place in the Hall of Fame, Kiernan spent the majority of his career at Sacramento City College (Calif.), the same school that former La Crosse Loggers field manager Andy McKay coached at when he joined the Loggers in 2008.

“We are excited about Coach Kiernan joining the staff,” said Kara Griswold, Steam General Manager. “His wealth of knowledge and experience in softball makes him a perfect fit for our Steam program. We are excited to see the impact he will have on our players as we move into our inaugural season.”

Kiernan helped over 400 student-athletes advance on to four-year schools including the likes of UCLA, Arizona, Arizona State, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas Tech, Texas A & M and more. His team’s won 22 conference championships at Sac City, appeared in 24 state championships, winning four titles and had 10 runner-up finishes. During his illustrious career, he coached 80 community college all-Americans, 10 Division I and 13 Division II all-Americans and he had seven former players compete in the College World Series.

Leveraging the 30-year success of the Northwoods League, the first for-profit Summer Collegiate Baseball League, Northwoods League Softball (NWLS) will be the first for-profit Women’s Summer Collegiate Softball League beginning play in the Upper Midwest in the summer of 2024.  The purpose of the League will be to develop players for their college, Olympic and future professional play.  Teams will be promoted similar to minor league baseball teams, playing games in front of fans in a fun, friendly, family-oriented environment.
