LA CROSSE, WI – In front of 625 fans at Copeland Park, the La Crosse Steam were defeated by the Madison Night Mares with a final score of 11-3.
The Night Mares took an early lead in the top of the 1st inning with Carly Oliver (Cumberlands) hitting a 2-RBI double. Oliver later scored from third on a throw down to second by Steam catcher Calli Janik (Mount Mercy), bringing the score to 3-0.
The Night Mares continued their momentum in the top of the 2nd inning with an RBI single from Addie Blomberg (UW-Madison), extending their lead to 4-0.
The Steam responded in the bottom of the 2nd inning, scoring three runs. Lindsey Schultz (Grinnell) hit an RBI single, Ashley Wolfe (Oregon State) contributed an RBI double, and Ashlee Chantos (Winona State) added an RBI single, narrowing the gap to 4-3.
However, the Night Mares regained control in the top of the 3rd inning, scoring three more runs due to a catching error that allowed two runners to score and a sacrifice fly from Lexie Shaver.
In the top of the 5th inning, the Night Mares solidified their lead with a four-run burst. Brooke Steinhorst advanced home as Danielle Lucey was hit, Kayla Thomas drove in Tia Durst, Addie Blomberg hit an RBI single, and Haley Remington scored on an error, resulting in the final score of 11-3.
With this defeat, the Steam’s record falls to 8-15, while the Night Mares improve to 15-10. The Steam will have another opportunity to bounce back at Copeland Park tomorrow, with the first pitch scheduled for 3:05 p.m.
