Battle Creek, MI – The Wisconsin Woodchucks shut out the Battle Creek Bombers 5-0 at C.O. Brown Stadium Wednesday behind the arms of Matt Smith and Connor Kelly.
Smith gave up eight hits and two walks while striking out four and earning the win in a six and two third inning start. Connor Kelly held the Bombers hitless in his two and one third innings on the bump to secure the win for the Chucks.
For just the second time in nine contests, Wisconsin held the first lead in a ballgame. The Chucks scored two runs in the first inning, coming on an RBI single from Connor Heady and a sacrifice fly from LJ Hatch.
Wisconsin got another run in the second. Owen Taylor walked and then scored on an RBI double to deep left field off the bat of Max Ponzurick.
The Chucks extended their lead to 5-0 in the fifth. Albee Weiss was hit by a pitch and Yusuke Akitoshi followed with a single. They both came home on a double down the left field line from LJ Hatch, giving him three RBI’s on the evening.
The victory snaps the Woodchucks’ five-game losing streak, and they will look to gain some momentum on the road as they play a two-game set with the Kalamazoo Growlers.
