Wausau, WIS –  The Wisconsin Woodchucks hit four home runs, two off the bat of Max Ponzurick and two from Albee Weiss, against the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters Sunday, but the Rafters outlasted the Chucks for a 10-9 win at Athletic Park.

Wisconsin Rapids opened the scoring with two runs in the second inning, but the Chucks answered with one run in the bottom of the frame. Ty Black hit a single with one out and Taylor Kohlwey scored him with a double to deep right center field.

In the third, Yusuke Akitoshi reached on an error and Jared Oliva was hit by a pitch to set up Weiss for a three-run blast to left center field.

Ponzurick hit his first home run in the following inning. Taylor Kohlwey singled before Ponzurick batted to make it a two-run bomb. The Rafters got one run in the top of the fourth, so Wisconsin led 6-3 going to the fifth.

The Chucks added another run in the sixth on a Yusuke Akitoshi RBI double, but Wisconsin Rapids scored six runs in the seventh, putting them up 9-7, a deficit the Chucks could not return from.

Ponzurick and Weiss hit their eighth and seventh homers of the season – each solo shots – in the eighth and ninth inning, respectively. However, the Rafters’ one insurance run in the ninth proved to be the difference.

Tyler Jandron got his first appearance on the mound as a Woodchuck in the starting role. He allowed two hits, two runs, two walks and struck out two in three innings. Kyle Dohy followed with him with three innings in relief, and he gave up two runs on three hits.

Joey Graziano, who pitched one and one third innings in relief for the Rafters got the win, and James Davitt earned the save. Tanner Gragg received the loss for the Chucks.

The Woodchucks and Rafters will resume a suspended game from May 27th tomorrow and play a regularly scheduled game at Witter Field.
